Does anybody actually wait for new albums from your favorites to be released anymore?

so, in slightly less drunken retrospective a couple hours later:

I think I was totally unclear about my questions and the thread ended up being a clusterfuck debate on whether the fact of downloading itself was a problem.

oh well!

I'm an impatient fucktard who downloads the bastard ahead of time like an archetypical internet teenager.

Me too.

I think bands, however, are starting to understand our predicament. In Italy, a new cd costs 19.99 euros...that's a lot of fucking money for an 8-12 song cd that you don't even know is gonna be good or not. That's about 24 US dollars. Now bands such as Arch Enemy and Hypocrisy throw in a little something extra like a bonus dvd with some live stuff and a couple of vids on it. Fuckin' hell, Legion of the Damned and In Flames threw in another cd with a video for every single song on the cd in their rehearsal space. I saw a video for Legion of the Damned, dug it, and then saw that the cd which cost just as much as any other cd came with another cd full of videos and I bought it right there. You gotta get some bang for your buck because although I respect the artists' need to make money to support themselves, I have to eat too...and I don't have endorsements, either.

That said, a band such as Nevermore will always put out quality material and I feel comfortable blindly buying their stuff, even without a bonus cd or dvd.

I NEVER download. I hate it. I would never appreciate the album as much as I would if I bought it. I love packaging too.

Amazing.

I, too, am in the minority it seems. I generally only buy albums, downloading only if they put a track specifically to be downloaded on their website. It just seems more taoist. There are exceptions (in the case of super big budgetted mainstream records, like the new Chili Peppers. Which is pretty bad, BTW), but I'll throw down to check out a band or record that I've heard good things about. I've blind bought and loved Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, sunn0))), Boris, Acid Mothers Temple, Xasthur, Leviathan, FM3, Venetian Snares, Oceansize, No-Man, Can, etc, the list goes on.

But that's all thanks to this fine establishment:

It's kind of like going to a movie without knowing anything about it. It could be a clunker, but if you follow the advice of the right people, it could be exhilarating.

Just the other day I bought a pretty big haul of CD's (Tower, RIP), of which the only one I've heard before was an Ozric Tentacles greatest hits which I plan on giving as a gift this year.

I suppose I'm just a whore for audio quality, mp3s just don't do it for me. Packaging is also very important, which is why I also buy (AND LISTEN TO!) a lot of LPs.

Come on people! Don't just say you support music, DO IT!

Yes, but following the reviews of a few choice opinions isn't really blind buying. Blind buying is when you've heard nothing about an artist and you take a leap of faith and throw down the cash for it. It's burned me more often than not, although I found an awesome band called Doomshine that way.

I have downloaded quite a few, and if there is something I really like I make the purchase. I can wait until the release of a cd, I am not that impatient about it. If I hear about a band and want to listen to them then I will download a few songs and then judge if they are worthy of purchase.

Am I a super dick if i never download anything AND i never buy cds anymore? For some reason record companies just send me cds for free. I guess i am a dick.

Yep.

A dick with a great rack.

Somebody had to say it.

Merry Christmas Steph!

(ps...lets see Christmas hat Steph again!)

i used to buy a lot of cds. then i realized i wasn't listening to them as much. i got an iPod, then realized that the only use of CDs to me was really just to put it on my computer, then on my iPod. recently, only cds i've actually bought have been Blood Mountain by Mastodon and The Scattering of Ashes by Into Eternity. Other than that, I don't buy a whole lot.
