Is there an easy way to do this with other band's friends too?, i noticed these lists are from your page but did you have to go through manually each person to get the links?
Here is the process:
Tools:
A spreadsheet program Excel is the king but there are others. OpenOffice calc is what I use because its free. You need to hunt down the 'text to columns' plug in for OpenOffice though. It's standard with Excel.
A web authoring tool: Notepad works but NVU or HTML Kit work better especially if you want to dirty your feet in Web Design. They are all free.
Find your target band:
1. Find local bands in your genre to promote live shows. Local promotion sites also can generate good results.
2. Big 'Signed' bands in your genre, was what I went after first but really unless your on the verge of getting signed its probably just a way to make friends all over the world. They won't have means to aid in support unless you stuble upon internet radio sites that could hopefully aid in promotion.
Once at your target bands MySpace site go to see all their friends.
The friends are listed in order by myspace ID so the first friends are the oldest and most likely have the most friends themselves.
Datamining:
1. Select view source in your browser. IE you will need to find it in the view menu or in the new IE its under the Page drop down. Its in FireFox's view menu also but the shortcut is ctrl+U. I use FireFox because it makes this easier.
2. Select All ctrl+A, and the Copy ctrl+C the content of the Source window that poped up.
3. Go to your Spreadsheet program and Paste ctrl+V all the source code. Now go to the bottom of what you pasted and select the next empty cell. I get there quickly by using ctrl+End (its next to Delete) and the Down Arrow. So you are now ready for the next page. You should be able to drag the column width to the size of your screen to reduce jumbledness. After you do this and there is lots of blank space in your rows you can Double click the handle of any row divider and it should reduce the gaps.
4. That Source window you copied from is now just taking up space. So select the Source Browser Window and Close it CTRL+W is the fastest way.
5. Go to the next Friends Page on the Target Myspace Site.
6. Repeat steps 1 - 5
Things to keep in mind. Spreadsheets can handle a little over 61K Rows so doing more than 50 friends pages is the limit for one sheet. Average Myspace friends page is around 1100 lines of code. I usually stop at about 15 or 20 pages which comes out to 600-800 friends.
Ok so you have a worksheet with a shitoad of useless html to filter through. Which is not too difficult.
Spreadsheet Work:
1. Sort Column A which is where you hopefully pasted all your source into. Its under the Data menu.
2. Use the Find function to get to the Friends links section CTRL+F using "viewprofile&friendid=" as your search criteria.
3. You should see a whole mess of similar looking link tags like the following:
<a title="ALTAR OF DAGON" href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=292541373">ALTAR OF ..</a>
4. Select all the Rows above them and delete them. Make sure you sorted them first or you just nuked a whole lot of copying and pasting.
5. Select all the Rows under the links and delete them. Your links block should be something like 40X how many pages you copied source from. If its doubled you have the image links also in your block.
OK so you now have all the friends IDs and Names. This is better than what I initially set up with the pages you see linked on this thread.
6. Getting all the unwanted stuff out of the picture. Use the Text to Columns tool found under Data in Excel, or in Open office after you find it and install it you should see it as a graphical menu item with text squigles on two sides of a line. Delimited is the method we want. There should be an setting for other with a text box next to it. Enter the equals sign "=" as your column break point. This spreads out the links across multiple columns.
7. Select and delete the columns that don't look like the following:
292541373">ALTAR OF ..</a>
8. To refine this use the Text to Columns function once more but this time use use "> as your delimiter in the other text box.
9. The number should now be in your first Column and the Name should be in the second. Under edit select the Find and Replace function and enter </a> as your find criteria and nothing as your replace. Click the replace all button.
10. OK this is the raw Myspace IDs and Names. Next we start building the llinks.
I. In the first empty column on the first Row (It should be Cell C1) enter <a href=" . This is the beginning of the link. If you hover over the bottom right corner of the cell your cursor should change from white to black. When it changes to black double click the corner. All the cells below it should fill up.
II. In Cell D1 enter
http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=invite.addfriend_verify&friendID=
. Hover over the bottom right corner of the cell your cursor should change from white to black. When it changes to black double click the corner. All the cells below it should fill up. **(This site truncates the link so you can hover over it and write it down, most browsers display the link on the bottom bar, or click on it and hope mysapce doesn't crap on you)**
III. In Cell E1 enter " target="_blank"> . Hover over the bottom right corner of the cell your cursor should change from white to black. When it changes to black double click the corner. All the cells below it should fill up.
IV. In Cell F1 enter </a><br> . Hover over the bottom right corner of the cell your cursor should change from white to black. When it changes to black double click the corner. All the cells below it should fill up.
V. In Cell G1 enter this formula =CONCATENATE(C1,D1,A1,E1,B1,F1) . Hover over the bottom right corner of the cell your cursor should change from white to black. When it changes to black double click the corner. All the cells below it should fill up. If you are using OpenOffice Calc the formula uses semi-colons instead of commas.
You have now created all the links for your HTML page. Now to create the file to use those links.
11. Open one of pages with the friends links on this thread.
12. View the source of the links page. It is just a poorely documented HTML page. Copy the source CTRL+A then CTRL+C.
13. Open notepad or whatever comes with your mac or Kate if your using KDE Linux. Paste the source CTRL+V.
14 You should see a html tag that says <body>. Select everything down to the </body> tag on the bottom of the page and delete it.
15. Copy and Paste the links you just made in you worksheet from column G into the document after the <body> tag. **(If there was some encoding nonsense and your quotes for the links are angled, use find and replace to make them straight, this is what will fuck with you most when you are trying to get the pages to work)**
16. In the header there is a tag <title> . After that tag enter what you to call the page, whatever you want.
18. Now save as under file. In the name field enter whatever you want this page to be called on you computer. Make sure to declare the file as html by ending the name with ".html", or ".htm".
19. Make sure you are logged into the MySpace site you want to add friends to.
20. Open a new Tab or a new Browser Window.
21. Select open
File in your browser. Open the file you just made and Add friends to your hearts content.
If you get lost or stuck I may try to help but since I can't see where you are screwing up my possibly incomplete directions I take no responsibility for any stress or anxiety this process may induce.
Good Luck, Google the Tools listed NVU, OpenOffice, HTML Kit to get them.
Must sleep too late.
