For his second solo disc, Dead Words Speak, released under the DOOM:VS moniker, Johan Ericson of DRACONIAN fame again indulges in bleak, desolate soundscapes that are both sonically and lyrically evocative. Occasional glimpses of beauty can be found amidst the detritus of fleshly life, and Johan unfolds very deep atmospheres that to a greater extent are heavier and darker than the Aeternus Vale debut from 2006. Although not as frequently as the previous disc, the genius transitions to softer sections with allusive melody lines pop up here and there, and this is most notably on the dreamlike The Lachymal Sleep track, which features adorable guitar harmonies, deep growls, evocative clean vocal lines, distant and eerie keyboard fills; a masterpiece of a track which sounds like a cross between SWALLOW THE SUN, SHAPE OF DESPAIR, SATURNUS and OPETH.
Johan Ericson knows a great deal about structure and pace. Moreover, he masters the art of conveying emotions perfectly, which cant be said about all the new bands that have added doom to their description tag. Doom is more than just slowing down the tempo; its about a feeling and creating a certain tone. By intertwining intense funeral doom soundscapes with more mellow and dreamlike passages, Johan is taking the listeners into their own realm of abysmal atmospheric soundscapes. The contrastive heavy and softer passages create a music style that gets one pumped up and enthused.
DOOM:VS is a funeral-driven doom/death project that should be checked out by all fans of early 90s doom metal scene. Although Dead Words Speak is darker and less accessible than its predecessor, Johan has created yet again an opus that is masterly executed on all accounts, and with this release he proves that hes one of the leading extreme Swedish metal musicians. Once drawn into this dark, melodic, and epic world of despair, it is uneasy to find your way out until the end. The desolate soundscapes and impenetrable atmospheres will leave you feeling utterly scared and alone...
