WOW. Just wow. Falkenbach meets Doomsword, which pretty much implies lots of Bathory and early Manowar influence too. Riffs to accompany a viking march into battle, and refreshingly enough, non-operatic, well controlled CLEAN vocals. Works well back to back with some Pagan Reign or Moonsorrow.

SOLD.

Yep, on one listen this is possibly their best since Crystal Logic? I can't believe I (of all people) hadn't heard this until last night. "Riddle of Steel" is just fantastic speed metal fury, one of the best songs I've heard in a while. I'm sure the guitar just exploded in flames under all that riff wizardry. Three trilogies on one album? Only negative is that it's a bit exhausting to listen to in one go, so it might be better to keep it one trilogy at a time.

SOLD.

Next two on the list....

Dark One - avoid it, there's way too much Bathory in it (albeit a little faster / edgier), but hey who knows. I'll post a sample tonight unless someone beats me to it.

Well, how do the vocals on this one compare to Bathory? Quorthon's vocals are the main reason I'm not into Bathory, not the music itself. The music itself is fine, plus you threw in a Falkenbach reference as well, so I'm certainly intrigued by it.

From Metal Archives:

"Ragnarok" opens with another grim riff with the devil's own signature tattooed into it. This track has the best chorus. Period. It strikes heavier than Thor's own hammer and annihlates everything in path. Pure energy and brimming epicness oozes out of it. Deathmaster's vocals shine again in this chorus. Powerful and operatic enough to drag emotions and energy from you. His performance on this track reminds me of the godly A.A. Nemtheanga of Primordial. Yes, on this track, his sheer energy rivals even that of the mighty Alan.

Holy S, Deathmaster sings on this?

YES DUDE!! I thought you knew about Gjallarhorn?! Fucking amazing, don;t listen to J. :tickled:

JK: I wanna hear your, and Erik's, opinions on the Holy Martyr. Fucking PHENOMENAL...as is that Martiria cd, but it isn't an "instant listen".

So Deathmaster is vocalist for Doomsword? You know, I like his vocals on this a little more than on Doomsword. They just seem less operatic and more Bathory'ish. Or is it exactly the same style? (I haven't heard any Doomsword in a while).

No, you're right. It's more along the lines of Quorthon with times of Nemtheanga :loco:, all with Deathmaster's touch/flair.

i had that gjallarhorn album a long time ago. it's not horrible, but just uninteresting. i guess i just prefer the original. no worries.

Haven't heard Holy Martyr yet, but I did check out Martiria this morning. It's good, a little generic (which isn't always a bad thing), but you're right it's not anything too instant.

One thing I did notice, however, was the strong NWOBHM influence. Abundance of duel guitar harmonies, and at times, the singer sounds just a little like Paul D'ianno.

There's even one moment which sounds similar to the slowed down bit in Charlotte the Harlot.
