Cuz usually I'm the guitarist
I feel that most of the time double tracking gets me better seperation but I compare both, double and quad. Lately I've been double tracking during the verses and quad during the chorus.
Another important factor is guitar fader rides. Have a listen to Andy Wallace's Chevelle production. The guitars seem to be all over the place in both level and gain (in a good way) It really seems to keep the mix moving and exciting.

Andy Wallace just seems to LOVE changing levels. I think he basically does it for everything. I don't have the patience or skill to do that but I'm sure that's one of the reasons he's so great.
