Dragonforce: 44,000 U.S. sales in two months

No one bothered to look at metal-archives.com yet? The information is all right there, just do a search for Demoniac, its the one from New Zealand (Nzl) (I'm not direct linking cause theres some tits in the band photo and Im not sure if posting a link to that would be a forum faux-pas).

edit: And I'm assuming just a bit that these guys weren't serious about racist lyrics cause I mean, afterall, Herman's not very white ;).

Yep, that has always been my thought on this band as well.
It is black metal and it is "shocking"!

Sorry, I am not a huge fan of black metal. I can't take it serious.
Their claim is "We hate organized religion" So then all these people are into Satanism (or they want you to think that anyhow).

Take it with a grain of salt. Black metal is a freakin' joke for the most part. It's all shock value. Herman Li is oriental! Obviously the band is not literally racist if he was involved with the project.

Not all a joke. See the whole Dissection fiasco of the past week.

Anyway, to use an extreme analogy, the Nazis were allied to the frickin Japanese... which is enough of a precedent to say Li's (Hong Kong descent I believe) presence in Demoniac (a New Zealand band relocated to England) neither proves nor disproves racism by itself.

And being from New Zealand, Demoniac's ideas of race and purity might be a bit different than those of a Klansman or neo-Nazi.

But yes, the whole Demoniac racism thing may have been a joke in poor taste. I don't know. But it is an issue, and it is something that should be put out there, examined, and questioned.

Wow, you guys need to lighten up. Merely mentioning hitler in a song isn't a racist comment. And taking a made up word like "niggerslut" as a serious insult is just plain dumb. They were a black metal band, what do you expect, make love not war songs, or songs about how much they love their grandma? Black metal bands are about offending people most of the time. Ever heard of the phrase "tongue in cheek"? Slayer's angel of death has a lot of hitler-isms too, does that mean that band (fronted by a christian, chilean man) are racists seriously promoting hatred? Or what about dragonforce having members from hong kong, south africa, ukraine, and new zealand?

Anyways, i'm sure a lot of your "clean" bands have racists members that just keep it out of the music. And even if it is in the music, its MUSIC, just listen to it if its good and enjoy it. And have you never said a racist comment in your life, maybe joking, that you might now regret?

I have one of the demoniac albums, the fire and the wind. To me it is just silly black metal fun, with insane shredding guitar solos and campy vocals and tongue in cheek lyrics. I am not racist (mostly), but if any racist person would read the lyrics and take them seriously, they are dumb too. the end. lighten up.

oh yea and if you think they are covering demoniac up: http://www.demoniac.com/index2.html

I realize this post was made just to taunt (no one could seriously believe this, right?), but I thought I'd say something anyway.

"Lighten up" isn't the proper response to bands like Demoniac who write songs either designed to instigate anger and violence, or else make light of them. Either way, it's irresponsible and in very, very poor taste.

Bands are free to create whatever they wish. However, I tend to believe that when a band strives to reach higher, to create something of beauty and value, that their contribution to the world is greater and more memorable. Infamy only lasts so long. But that which is created when a band reaches for the heights lasts far longer -- which is why we can listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Revolver 40 years after they were created (or how about Leftoverture or 2112 or Dark Side of the Moon some 30 years on?)...and why Demoniac is dead and gone, hardly even an afterthought.

I don't know what I'm trying to say here other than a band's personal philosophy matters. What they think of their fans, their music, the world around them. It all matters.

At least, to me anyway.

Cheers,

Bill

Well demoniac isn't forgotten, since we are discussing them right now, and I still listen to demoniac, and they still maintain their webpage http://www.demoniac.com/ but also, that is just retarded comparing a black metal band's lasting fame to that of some of the biggest pop rock artists of the last 50 years.. Those beatles albums live on because they have mass mainstream appeal and millions of dollars of marketting in their history. No matter how brilliant, ground breaking, or earth shattering a black metal band is (which is what, for instance, I would describe late emperor) they can't hope to achieve 1/10000 of that best the style is black metal, not dentist office music.

And way to ignore all of the other points made (such as dragonforce/demoniac members coming from all parts of the world)

take care!

I try not to spam it around too much, although people tell me I should anyways. Regor and Lars316 are the rhythm guitarist and drummer, respectively. Our lead guitarist infamously met "Laura" last year, if you remember that hilarious story.

Naw, fuck that. Not respectively. They deserve no respect! HAHHAHOMGWTFLOLBBQ!!!1!!one!!1!!!1

Our shit: justdefymetal.com and myspace.com/justdefymetal We don't have a cleaned up recording of our material, so these songs are from video of our recent show. I prolly coulda ran them through an EQ to clean up the muddiness a bit, but hey, that just gives me an excuse to record more.

We're the Manticora fanboys from last year with that whole cancer thing, if you remember. Lars jumped on top of us and shoved the mic in our faces. And he and Claus better show up this year! We need drinking partners!!!

And while I'm typing this up, I'll reference the Slayer interview in the previous issue of Guitar World. King wrote some lyrics that ACTUALLY offended Tom Araya, and Tom went to Jeff about it. Jeff said, "Dude, you're in Slayer! You're the Antichrist, you said it yourself!"

Demonaic was probably racist and hateful and reprehensible, just the same way that Marilyn Manson is so hateful, just the same way GWAR is so disgusting, and just the same way Napalm Death is vulgar. I wonder if Sam and Herman were even the ones who wrote the lyrics. Hell, if they even understood or paid attention to the lyrics! Sometimes, bands are cooler (The Misfits come to mind) when you have no idea what the real lyrics are!

Well, Kerry King is Jewish, so I don't think any of their lyrics would be offensive.

Also, what the heck are you talking about with the Misfits?
That is some catchy as hell stuff. How can you not understand the lyrics?

Why is one kind of hate speech acceptable, and another not? Theoretically, arguably morally, and often legally, any attack on another's age, RACE, sex, RELIGION, national origin, or sexual orientation is hate speech. Therefore, why give a pass to attacks on religion in metal and condemn attacks on race?

Mind you I'm not condoning either, but one does wonder about the double standard being applied here. Especially since these are Black Metal lyrics, which one should expect to have some degree of hate speech. Does it really matter to which subject matter the hate is directed?

I contend that it does not, though perhaps people apply a higher standard when their personal sensibilities are affronted. Keep in mind that hate lyrics have been affronting somebody, somewhere, as long as there have been hate lyrics.

This is Heavy Metal, and if you're going to listen to it inevitably you're going to run into something offensive. When that happens most of the time people tend to ignore it, or at least not take it seriously. Personally, I'm not sure how seriously I can take a song about white supremacy being played by a Chinaman.

Honestly, hate is bad when it is targeted at anyone for "hateful" purposes. But we have all become a bunch of sissies in this country and in the world. Political correctness has too much a grip on our society to the point where people and groups (any kind) are actively seeking out to be offended by something, somewhere and then filing law suits or boycotting or condemning the "offender" over such "offense." People need to find better things to do with their lives. Oh, I know, raise your kids properly, work hard, stop whining, take responsibility. The kind of stuff that past generations seemed to accept without a wimper.

I'm stretching my memory here. I think I'm crossing Napalm Death with another band. I'm trying to remember the first metal band that actually freaked me out/repulsed me, and that was a looong time ago. Hold on...

....no I think I'm thinking of Deicide. I think.

SHADDAP IT'S A MONDAY AND I WAS HALF-ASLEEP ALL DAY AT WORK.

Fuckin Mondays... I'm gonna write a song about customer phone calls on Monday mornings....

And I stand by my comments about the Misfits. I tried understanding what the hell the words to Green Hell were, after hearing MetallicA covered it. So I listened to a friend's copy of the original song, and it was even more indistinguishable. The only other band I can think of that's worse than that is Slayer. I still don't know what the words to Hell Awaits is saying. Tom Araya can sing faster than I can think.
