Dragonforce: 44,000 U.S. sales in two months

Anyone that thinks they don't deserve a headline tour can officially shut the hell up now. They are going to pass the latest from In Flames, Opeth, & Lacuna Coil easily at this rate. They are also going to outdraw tours from Blind Guardian & Stratovarius easily.
So we should all start loving and hyping them?

None of this changes the fact that they are mediocre at best and sucky at worst.

Since when has playing as fast as possible, singing totally cheesy lyrics in big singalong like fashion, and throwing out blast beats like they're free been MAINSTREAM or a BANDWAGON thing? I see no reason that they should have mass appeal to the kiddies of today because the kiddies of today are more kin to Emo and Screamo stuff. I saw them in Los Angeles earlier this year and those guys are great live. Sure its not as polished as the records, but hey... what is? I think the fact that Dragonforce has succeeded in breaking through the American market where other bands have not, is because they tried. A lot of the other power metal acts which have been around since the late 80's have said countless times that the American market wasn't worth the effort because the genre wasn't as popular here. I think the record labels for the most part have done a piss poor job in marketing for the euro bands in general. I wouldn't be surprised, having seen the success DragonForce is having, if you see a sudden wave of power metal marketing in the USA. Personally, I love the band! I'm all for thought provoking progressive music, be it heavy, be it not. But sometimes (and its becoming all too often in the world today), I need to listen to something I don't have to think about, something I can sing along with and laugh about how fast the guitars are or how cheesy the lyrics are. The bottom line is, if I've had a crappy day, and for some reason I'm having to drive home in rush hour traffic where every idiot on the highway seems to be magnetically attracted to my vehicle while obliviously switching lanes, one hand on the cell phone, the other reaching back to beat their kids silly, I can pop in DragonForce and in a few seconds I could give a shit less. You really can't be angry or unhappy listening to that band, they're too over the top cheesy! I, for one, appreciate them for that and hope they don't change.

No man, re-read his post. It means anyone that said they can't do tours in the US by themselves should shut the fuck up. Jeez, I need some of you folks needs some glasses!

And btw, the "Mediocre" and "sucky" are just your opinions, not facts.

Correct. That was the entire point of the post. However, don't sweat it. Batmura still hasn't forgiven me for defending the new Evergrey disc. :heh:

Oh, don't you forget Coleco Vision!!! Long live the telephone look alike joystick!!!

Honorable mention: Commodore 64:)

Coleco seems to just have been a tad before my time. I remember I was in either preschool or kindergarten when my dad brought home an NES. So that must have been around 87 or 88...my friend had a Sega Master System tho :D.

It's okay. I'm sure me and you haven't forgiven him either for not agreeing with us on Evergrey and Dragonforce.:lol::lol:

Oh yeah, like they invented the music they're playing. Like these idiots are capable of creating and not riding a fucking wave.

I hate these fucking clowns more and more every time I I learn more about them.

To sum up for people that don't know:

Two of the current Dragonforce lineup produced this:

"Hitler Metal want to bang my fucking head
And fist the living dead in the middle of the night alright
I really want to bang my head and fist the living dead middle of the night my sign
The Metal's in my blood and the power is here and now for you!
Hitler Metal! Sieg Hail!"

... they "explained this away" by saying they were only joking and paying tribute to the German metal bands that came before them (Sodom/Kreator side and the Gamma Ray/Running Wild side...).

However, earlier the band had put this little gem out (Only one of them was in the band at this time, but still...)

"Blood proud, blood pure, their blood
Spilled once more, sacred ground, might stand tall
Crush their spirit, till they fall

Aliens invade this place, white man stand up for your race
Be proud of your heritage, strong will, all through the ages
Angered but still with pride, show true feelings with nothing to hide"

Demoniac. Look 'em up. They pretty much turned into Dragonforce.

OH NO, a few of the members were in an EVIL, NON-CHRISTIAN ,BLACK METAL BAND? OMG I HATE THEM NOW, cletus, get the rifle, we have some jesus-hating faggot's to lynch! Silly songs about hitler or waging war, HOW SCANDELOUS.... What is your point with this. I thought demoniac were cool but the vocals were a bit annoying.

I don't think the fame will trickle down that much, for instance look at DIMMU BORGIR, who rose to ozzfest mainstage status a couple years ago. Yeah, they are very popular, but it seems that them and cradle of filth fillt he "black metal quota" that most mainstream ozzfest kids/people are willing to listen to. The kids like dragonforce because its a silly break from atreyu and stab me with your dying bleeding eyes, and music they've never heard before. But they dont care enough to hear more of it

Okay. I give. I just bought two tickets to Dragonforce at Harpo's in Detroit on Saturday, September 23rd.

I still think they sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks, but -- hey -- I'm an open-minded guy. I'm willing to give them a try. (My wife, on the other hand, is liable to kill me when she finds out...)

Cheers,

Funny stuff.

Ridiculous.

It *appears* to me that many (Editor's Note: Not ALL) of you think that DF sucks merely because:

a) they're popular
b) they're outselling "other more-deserving" power metal bands
c) they have an "Ozzfest" type following (that is, the Hot Topic crowd)

If you don't like their music, I can somewhat understand that. It's (almost all) fast, somewhat repetitive, and not all that original. That being said, they're a hundred times better than 99% of the crap that's out there today. And that goes not only for rap/pop, but 99% of the popular "rock" music too.

Who knows...DF today, perhaps Porcupine Tree or Vision Divine will be the big thing tomorrrow....

I attribute much of the prog/power metal success to this very festival. Five years ago, I never dreamt of a headlining Stratovarius show here in the states, nevermind a headlining Stratovarius tour....or Edguy or Kamelot for that matter! Now they're able to tour about a half dozen cities regularly. That's not too terrible. They started with about 50 fans in the entire country, now they have thousands.

I'm not saying you should jump on the DF bandwagon, but don't knock them either. They deserve a US tour and I'll be there to enjoy it with the 16 year old kid with the Hot Topic DF tee shirt standing next to me..........

It would be ridiculous to not like them because they are getting all the atention.. But I am pretty sure that most people on this board who dislike them are the people who don't enjoy power metal on the first place...

Can anyone confirm or verify this? This is serious. You won't get away from this with "just joking".

I'm amazed at how some people can be this alienated and miss a point so bad. "Evil", "non-christian", or being a black metal band is not even close to what is being brought up. Anyone that has been on the short end of racism can't simply overlook this as a "silly song". If the allegations are true, DF is not getting a single cent from me, no matter how much I may like their music, and I would encourage others to do the same. I will not sponsor these messages. Again, this is serious.

You're really on the wrong track if you think anti-Christian content will get me upset.

My point is the band has direct and irrefutable links to a band with racist content. If you don't care about that, then whatever, but it is real.

Just look up any number of sites that deal with discographies and lyrics.

Every single member of the last Demoniac lineup has appeared in some capacity with Dragonheart/Dragonforce, which leads to the "irrefutable link" part. I'd go so far as to say it's the same band that just "updated" their style and changed a singer.

"Myths of Metal" was on the last Demoniac album The Fire and the Wind. The "silly" Hitlerisms become inexcusable when looking at the band's previous work. The second song I quoted from was called Hatred is Purity (off of the Stormblade album), and I think the "silly" war song is not-so-innocent.

Same album has a song called Niggerslut.

Hmmm. This thread is disconcerting to me. I had no idea DragonForce sprang up from Demoniac.

I spent time just now looking up Demoniac and DragonForce on Wikipedia and going to their respective web sites. Unfortunately, the Demoniac band didn't go by actual names. Only single-word names. The photos, however, appear to include a couple of guys ("Shred" on the Demoniac site looks a lot like Herman Li from DragonForce, for example). And the dates match up -- with Demoniac disbanding in late 1999 and DragonForce beginning at that same time.

So it appears some of the guys from Demoniac started DragonForce, although I'm not seeing those words on the DragonForce web site. I only read it in Wikipedia. And can that be trusted 100%?

One thing is clear: some of the lyrics from Demoniac are abysmal, reprehensible and indefensible. Really godawful stuff.

However, what I don't yet know is why the drastic change in styles -- both lyrically and, I would imagine, musically. Did the guys who used to be in Demoniac dislike all that death and hate crap and want out? Were they not really like that to begin with and maybe in DragonForce they're more like who they really are as people?

That's the element that's missing here. It's one thing to be a certain twisted way and still be that way. But it's another thing entirely to have been a certain way and to no longer think/believe the same way.

So until I see an interview with a DragonForce guy and read his own words about his association with Demoniac (and his continued belief in the lyrical content of Demoniac), I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Although I must say my tentative interest in the band is waning...

Here's my review of the first Dragonforce album, written not long after it came out: http://www.lotfp.com/content.php?reviewid=33 Not exactly a fair and balanced piece, hehe, but it does reflect my checking up on the bands and discovering they were at best severing, at worst covering up, the real ties between the two band names.

Shred is indeed Li. Heimdall, on every Demoniac album, was Totman (and I was reading Terrorizer in the days the last Demoniac album was released, it is definitely him). Check this link: http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=2097 Metal Archives isn't 100% reliable but I think they've nailed the common band members by name and alias.

Dragonforce only exists because the style itself was already getting popular. See again my review of the first album and how they presented themselves to the British audience.

Dave Burns discusses this matter in depth in his False Metal article. Read this http://www.lotfp.com/content.php?editorialid=57 beginning with the paragraph that starts "Despite the shitstorm unleashed by the grafting of the term", and the Demoniac stuff continues to the end of that page.

Anyone familiar with the Demoniac situation is either going to "play ball" with the Dragonforce hype machine or not get close enough to them to get such a conversation on the record.

And by all means, somebody PLEASE prove me wrong on that one, but do have the courtesy to make it a real conversation, without letting them just blow it off. :D

You'll be seeing my band opening up for that show.

I am surprised how many people did not know about DEMONIAC.
I never knew this was a secret or rare knowledge.

Anyhow, I am sure Sharon Osbourne had no clue
(Much like she obviously had no clue that Bruce Dickinson has been slamming reality TV on stage since the Ed Hunter tour, though she took it as a direct insult to Ozzy)

Take it with a grain of salt. Black metal is a freakin' joke for the most part. It's all shock value. Herman Li is oriental! Obviously the band is not literally racist if he was involved with the project.
