Okay - so I get back to Colorado on Sunday the 17th - prolly about 6 or so (I gain a couple hours heading back woo hoo) - so by the time i get from Denver to my house it will be 7pm - if people stay outta the way - and funnily enuff - at a club about a mile from my house than night - is Dragonforce. Now I was pretty wiped out after last years' PP - but I think I may have it in me to see one more set of metal (of any kind that isnt nu, lol) in me before I call in sick the next day :)

It is always good when a band that plays real metal is able to sell as much as they have in today's modern music climate without having to compromise their sound.

Dragonforce might be gimmicky, and they might have put out the exact same album 3 times now, but if we can get increased attention, tours, and distribution by European power metal bands in the USA we shouldn't be complaining as fans.

I completely agree with you! Plus, they put on an amazing live show. If this means that I can say "No, not 'dying baby music,' 'dragonforce type' music" to the strange faces I get when I say I like metal, then even better!

Look, I'm excited as anything for metal bands to hit a market and make money off what they do here in America. the end.

Anyone that thinks they don't deserve a headline tour can officially shut the hell up now. They are going to pass the latest from In Flames, Opeth, & Lacuna Coil easily at this rate. They are also going to outdraw tours from Blind Guardian & Stratovarius easily.

Whew....

I won't shut the hell up because they are still 3rd rate, gay, Velveeta Power Metal. They make any album by Blind Guardian look like Master Of Puppets in comparison.

And by the time their next album comes out, all the trend-hopping teenagers who think they are 'kewl' :Puke: will be jumping ship and hopping on to the next thing.

Dragonforce:
Talented musicians? Check.
Energetic live band? Check.
Staying power? Skeptical.

More power to them, but in my opinion, they're a one trick pony. For my tastes, I can think of a large handful of bands that occupy this board and our lives that deserve more props than DF have been given.

Not a fan at all... when I first heard them some yrs ago I thought they sucked. My opinion of course.

With that aside, good for them for making some sort of dent in the USA

And then again, that's your opinion.

Hahah, another example of how they've gotten big. I remember when Valley (album not the demo) came out and I hit up Noise to interview them. The same day the publicist got back to me excited as hell and arranged an intie with Herman less than a week away. Recently I tried getting an interview with them for when they come to Houston. Roadrunner gave me the fist of denial. Haha, once you're in mags and all over the place online zines are jack shit to some people. I'm not saying the band thinks this at all though so please dont get me wrong. And I still like em, a good bit actually.

Concur.

What I'm hoping is that this rising tide will lift all boats, and maybe the same kids who are buying Dragonforce t-shirts at Hot Topic and showing up at their shows might just discover some other bands in the genre....but I'm not too hopeful.

DF's singer didn't agree. After their show here I mentioned the 'rising tide' helping out other deserving bands and he was really down on the idea. "We're doing all the work; fuck 'em!" Direct quote. It was the only blemish on an otherwise fun conversation.

Dragonforce are the last power-metal band. If they really take off and other bands (like, say, Cellador) are successfully pushed by their labels and get big, the genre will be renamed into something the kids (and music critics) can stomach. The kidz all know that "power" metal is ghey; they've been programmed to think that for years. Maybe they'll revive "speed metal" again, or thrash metal. After all, according to [adult swim], Vader, Behemoth and Carpathian Forest are all 'thrash' metal...... :heh:

I can totally see Cellador taking off like Dragonforce has. From what I've seen Metal Blade is pushing them nicely... The only time I've seen Headbangers Ball recently I saw a commercial for Enter Deception and their US Tour at the time. Not sure how often that gets played as I was only watching that day for the possibility of a Gigantour announcement.

I might point out that AC/DC rode a one trick pony for over 25 years.

I would personally prefer that the "rising tide" remain relatively low, as I'd rather watch concerts in the intimate settings these types of bands currently play in. That is to say it is a good thing see 10 bands, 4 of which are at the top of their respective genres at Earthlink/Center Stage. Much better than 1 major band with 1 opener from the nosebleed sections of some sports arena. Yes a few more quality acts doing a few more tours would be nice, but that's all the growth I care to see.

That said, I find it ironic that people who pine for the return to the glory days of metal so quickly criticise the first Metal band to achieve even an iota of success in 10 years. It's amazing how fast people pick up the rhetoric like this new Video Game Metal bullshit. I'm a gamer. I multiplayer game online and have for years since the old days of Diablo I (for those of you who may know what that is), and I know what video game background music sounds like. Basing DragonForce's success on some idiotic relation to kids' facination with video game soundtrack music is ridiculous.

There were a lot of younger faces at the Atlanta show, true, but there was a large number of people with receding salt and pepper hair, old beer guts, and saggy boobs too. DragonForce may have gotten the attention of Hot Topics kids, but that certainly isn't the only demographic they're drawing from. And what the Hell is wrong with kids jumpping on the fan wagon anyway? For those who wish for the resurgence of Metal I pose the question: Who do you think are going to be the fans that make it happen? It isn't going to be a bunch of 40 somethings who currently listen to Sister Hazel who suddenly revive their Twisted Sister passion form years past. Hot Topics kids are the future. If they're going to keep Metal going, they may as well start now.

Shortly after PP VI, as always happens, there were the inevidable PP VII suggestion threads. It's interesting to compare what was said then to what's being said now. Glenn said in his PP VII roster selection thread that Thunderstone was "on everybody's list." That certainly raised my eyebrows when I read it, as it wasn't the way I remembered it. Funny where the band that so many now think sucks ended up on that list.

Whats ridiculous IMO is that obviously you arent the gamer you claim to be. Tell me how many games you've played for the TURBO DUO (do you even know this system?), SEGA CD, SEGA SATURN, 3DO, SNES, DREAMCAST, etc.

I have video game music that sounds like fucking Symphony X for christs sakes (LORDS OF THUNDER), and Doug Aldrich has done video game music for SEGA (LAST GLADIATORS PINBALL).

Ever heard of Tommy Tallarico?? Hes done amazing work with Video Games.

http://www.tallarico.com/index.php?s=home

Mentioning Diablo as an example tells me just how unaware of the Video Game music scene you are. I could go on all day as I used to be a big Video Game Soundtrack collector. Listen to some of the RPG soundtracks, then come back to this thread.

Its retro video game music... like Mario brothers sounds. Its not 'video game' music like todays symphonic stuff. Obviously today we have full music tracks in games. Back then it was a bunch of bleeps. And thats what Dragonforce throws in. Are they first to do such things on guitars? No. Are they first power metal band? I think so.

It's funny to say dragonforce is now popular because it sounds like video game music
lmao

Agreed, I certainly dont agree with that logic, but I do believe alot of there music does in fact sound like old school games.

Wizards & Warriors anyone from the NES?

They brought out some hilarious Mario Bros. sounds live on the keytar.

And to quote the philosophy of Dethklok: "WE WILL MAKE EVERYTHING METAL!"
^I like that idea.

GUESS WHO'S OPENING UP FOR THE DETROIT STOP OF DRAGONFORCE'S TOUR???
