Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

these guys are still around?

they've always been terrible. i am basing that off images and words and scenes from a memory.

John Petrucci = amazing
Mike Portnoy = terrible
John Myung = boring
Jordan Rudess = annoying
James LaBrie = his style fit "Scenes.." very nicely but everything else has been questionable for me. Might be better off singing in a musical or something.

I hope you realize Mike Portnoy is an absolutely brilliant drummer and your just being silly.

No, I used to think he was god incarnate and then I listened to some more drummers and realized, "no wait, Portnoy is actually terrible." He has no style and he's not even that technically proficient. He's good with time signatures but isn't that what drummers are supposed to be good at?

No, I think you should maybe, listen again
He's not god incarnate but he is incredibly good. Some of his most impressive work is not in Dream Theatre though. I use to think he was overrated as well, then I saw him live. *breaks drumsticks*

No, you should listen
I too have seen him live (twice at drum clinics) and was kinda meh. The drum clinics were interesting but I honestly wasn't impressed. And, honestly, it was his work outside of DT that finally turned me off of him. Most notably the stuff from Liquid Tension Experiment, Working Man. His performance on Once in a LiveTime was downright BAD.
I'm not saying he's a bad drummer overall, he's just amazingly, incredibly overrated because he plays about 64 notes a second yet doesn't know how to turn it off.

Hmm, I pretty much disagree entirely, but thats life. I can think of many drummers that do speed better than him, thats not what he excells in. In fact he dosent really "play 64 notes a second" very often as many "prog" drummers do. For one, he is incredibly fucking solid. He flows well with almost every musical project he works in, and can improvise like hell. His tecnhique is pretty much perfect as well. Im not sure what it takes to "impress" you, does he need to spit fire and juggle kittens while playing?

It's his choice of notes. I've heard several musicians say they like DTs music but can't stand "that drummer".

there are two main problems with later day DT ... the singer and the drummer ... both of which call way to much attention to themselves. the band doesn't sound like a "team"

IAW was the only disc I think which just "flowed" with everyone in synch

Kevin Moore came did come up with cooler things. People complain ALOT more about Labrie than Portnoy. I almost never hear anyone complain about Portnoy.

*side note- most musicians are stuck up assholes.

Not exactly.
listen up: i'm the world's new form of spambot. my features? i'm the first sentient spambot. i choose metal forums to post on, even though i don't actually listen to metal....i don't actually listen to music. i randomly generate songs for my last fm which i know would irritate metal listeners to no end, like bands which are loud and noisy but definitely not metal at all no way ever ever (like converge), indie rock, and hip hop. i'm only the first in a new generation. soon there will be millions like me. prepare yourself.
