Ok, Train of Thought has been released today in France since Nov 11th is a Red Letter Day.
Those who want to keep the surprise until tomorrow please don't read what is below :
For what it's worth, I can certainly understand why many fans will be shocked & saddened, but for me, the initial realization that it's more enjoyable to me than 6 DEGREES, as well as still being in recovery from the shock of how much ST ANGER sucked, it's doing OK so far. I haven't had enough time with it (while concentrating at the review level) to fully (de)preciate Petrucci's work, but I'm inclined to agree with those that aren't keen on his soloing. Still, the songs just have hook that was completely absent from the previous disc. I'd highly recommend trying before you buy, but I think it's going to do pretty well afterall.

By the way the worst album of the year and biggest piece of #$@% is Kid Rock! Metallica is not for behind! they really suck!

Wait a second. Ed, I didn't take offense to this statement as I could give a rat's ass about these two bands, but are you the guy who has been say something to the effect that constructive criticism is okay but malicious statements are uncalled for??

Besides, the biggest piece of s*?t album is Metallica's and both artists suck #ss.

Whoa, Nellie!!!! What a trip! I'm not a Metallica fan, LOL -- didn't know I knew some of their riffs already!!! Not to mention Britney - arghhhh, talk about ruining a good song LOL!!!! Too funny, Dan!!!!! Whoever put this together is a very creative dude!

Cheers!

I have heard TOT several times, and it misses something. They tried, and did their best, but to my taste, it lacks something. Melody, musicality, emotion. Not even metal - it's loud, but misses so much. LaBrie is singing in a way that is not his. Overacting, if you ask me. The Silent Man was a lot better for his voice! The lyrics are more direct, easier to understand. But at times they're too easy, almost cheesy. Well, just my opinion...
On parts they're freaking out, showing off technical skills but forgetting to play music. Other parts are plain boring. Like the first track, if that was 4 minutes it would have been better. 6 Degrees wasn't my cup of tea, but this is nothing. Ah well, maybe I simply don't understand.

It seems you are missing something. As far as emotion, its all over the place, especially songs loke Vacant, In the Name of God and Honor Thy Father. In the Name of God has that incredible ending that is among the most emotional of all DT music. Melody? Well, its certainly not as melodic as say SFAM, but that was not the aim of these songs, to show that aspect of their music. Its somewhat dark and brooding lyrical themes and music which does not lend itself to a melodic approach. There are some solos that don"t seem to go anywhere but for the most part the playing is quite thrilling. And yes, heavy as all hell, for DT anyway. Its certainly metal, and no doubt prog as well. Labrie's vocals? I don't hear anything to complain about. In fact I feel it was one of his best performances. It may not be my favorite direction of the band, but I think they pulled it off nicely.

Train of Thought is awsome.

When I first put it on, I was a little surprised since it is a little different from the stuff before. I really liked the track 1 intro though.

But the more I listened the more I liked. To me, this really does seem like a natural progression from SDoIT, which is one of my favorite all time discs.

Even though many fans hate it, I bet they will stand amazed when they see it live. I just can't imagine that stuff being played, the place will go wild.

I finally got to hear "Train of Thought" a couple weeks ago... and I think it is really bad. I am a huge fan of metal, but I think perhaps that DT is not a band that should try to be metal. I think they should leave that to the real metal bands who do it better. There just doesn't seem to be the great sense of melody, creativity, and boundless exuberance that made such albums as "Awake" and "Images and Words" so excellent.

What makes it really bad? What aspect of it don't you like? Forget what the aim of the band is, how are the songs themselves? As for being metal, DT always have been, just the progressive variety. I've always considered them to be a prog band, but in reality they are equal parts prog and metal. Am I right in thinking you heard this only once or twice? If so, give it more of a chance, it is a grower.
