I find awake to be more rock then metal, and much less prog then the rest of their stuff. I really like it, but my favs are SFAM, the first disc of SDOIT (the glass prison? HELLO!) and I&W is still really good.

I bought scenes from a memory a few months back. I think I've listened to it about twice. I thought I could get over the cheesey vocals, but I was wrong.

I really wouldn't start with Awake with Dream Theater, but it's still a good album. Unfortunately the first track sucks. The rest is a lot better. Get I & W first if you can.

6FOIT is my favourite. all of them except the debut and FII are great.

I love all of Dream Theater's albums. They all offer something unique and incredible. Awake is a fine album.

I agree, every Dream Theater album shows an evolution in their sound while still remaining true to their roots. Everybody always slags Labrie's voice, but I think his style is quite unique and I couldn't imagine the band with anyone else.

i think a change of seasons is really good, and images and words is really awsome IMO.
but i guess its all in the matter of taste, i do like ToT and M pt2. the dvd is pretty sweet as well.

Well, I'll stick my neck out and go ahead and say it. When it comes to DT, James LaBrie is why I got into them and still like them. Yes, he's not perfect, but he fits the band well, and I've never gotten tired of him, even with his mistakes. No singer is perfect all the time.

I've been getting to Awake more lately, and I couldn't imagine 'The Silent Man' sung by anyone else.

Images and Words is their best album, it set the standard for todays progressive metal. Awake is also a fine album, it has a much different tone in comparison to I&W but i love it nonetheless
