I've never really listened to them, I heard Pull Me under which was pretty good, and a cheesy sounding ballad song a long time ago. But from the posts here it seems they are pretty progressive, so I want to check them out. What are some of the "better" songs I should listen to??

okies, you asked the right guy muahahaha!!! I am a Dream Theater freak. Anyway i am pretty sure you will hate the vocals anyway but if you can ignore them and focus on the instrumentation.

The Dance Of Eternity
Overture 1928/Steange Deja Vu
Fatal Tragedy
Learning To Live
Erotomania
Solitary Shell
A Change Of Seasons
Blind Faith
Space Dye Vest

I should stop now... they havE SO MANY good songs though! Most people just have a problem with the vocals, but if you can look past that they are a damn brilliant band! I even like the vocals somewhat! (I believe you can teach yourself to enjoy things if you must)

The Great Debate

I feel like I've discussed DT in like 3 threads recently.....check through the old posts and I think you'll find this topic already. It's mind boggling to me that anyone can like the newer stuff more than the old. Get Images and Words and Awake. Do NOT get the newest one for it is utter shit compared to the old. A Change of seasons is just one 23 min song and is NOT overrated, but sensationally bombass. Did I see someone actually reccomend "The Great Debate" among DT's impressive catalogue of spectacular songs?!??!?! I feel enraged to the point of wanting to kick someone's ass. This is their worst song on their second worst cd. Holy crap. Hahaha

This shit may fly in Fuckville, but in my, well, basement I guess, it doesn't. I’ll agree that older Dream Theater is by in large better yet Scenes from a Memory is clearly their best album.

The Great Debate wasn't exactly my cup o' tea either at the beginning.. but I gave things a chance.. music that's truly great sometimes has to grow on you and you might need to see it from different angles in order to get that "aha" experience...

and The Great Debate is brilliant in so many ways... to me atleast...

and as for the new material... it rocks but it ain't no Awake or Images and Words (I'm tied between those two when it comes to fave album)... but it's WAY up there...

and keep in mind.. this is all subjective.. I get so provoked when I see people disrespecting others and uttering their opinions like there could be no other... that's just childish...

I second Silent Downfall's first comment. The best advice I can give is avoid Dream Theater at all costs. There CD's aren't even worthy to be a coaster. Just my opinion

That is peculiar... because they have talent and unique songwriting. Those seem to be good things to have and a lot of people draw inspiration from that. I get very very confused when i see people who don't like Dream Theater because they seem to have all the qualities most people search for in a band (minus a good singer hehe) I feel very sorry for you dreamlord that you can't get into them. Don't worry it's not your fault but it is a real shame.

First of all, the singer just plain sucks. I try to ignore but it's like a voice in my head. He just doesn't go away.

Second of all, there is WAY too much wanking. We know you can play the guitar, but shit, don't shove it in our face. Showoff.

It's not a shame. Don't pity me. I'm perfectly happy I don't like them. At least I haven't fallen for their pompousness
