Dream Theatre recommendations?

I completely understand the seemingly massive distaste for LaBrie, but I personally think when he stays away from the high pitched nasally screeching he is amazing.

I had a huge letdown with Dream Theatre today. Ok they know how to play odd signatures with well made riffs but the more obsessive timing sound a little like" i wanna be weird prog!!" like and loose a lot of sentiment and edge, and while the solo's are something of a virtuoso level they were always using simple and boring time signatures ( mainly 4/4 based only ) to solo over, anyone can be fast like that. I would rather listen to a band like Cynic that is not that acrobatic but it doesnt uses weird time signatures for the shake of using weird time signatures, and keeps doing great harmony and melody over the solo parts. It seems like any progresive band out there forgets about their crazy 17/13 and bla bla bla stuff when the wanna solo and do blues 4/4 timming for soloing over, it REALLY makes the song as a whole suffer, its not funny to see a really obsesive jazz band freaking out on times only to start playing blues when they wanna solo, it just says: "Im a technical muscician on paper, not on the run"/

First of all, the singer just plain sucks. I try to ignore but it's like a voice in my head. He just doesn't go away.

Second of all, there is WAY too much wanking. We know you can play the guitar, but shit, don't shove it in our face. Showoff.

It's not a shame. Don't pity me. I'm perfectly happy I don't like them. At least I haven't fallen for their pompousness

Hahaha, yea if i wanted to see that i would catch the g3.

And yea like all bands they have their ups and downs, they are a bit overrated by frantic fans, but then again what progressive band isnt?

*looks around and laughs*

ummm...

Beyond this life first solo is in 5/4 and is not bluesy
many solo like runs are in 4/4 into 6/4

the solo in Home, has a sitar like sound and feel to it, again not bluesy. And then end guitar keyboard solo tacet is in 7/8 and 5/8.

the dance of eternity goes from 7/8, 3/4, 3/8. 7/16, 4/4, 3/4, 6/4, 5/4, 12/8 , 9/8, 15/8..yeh and most of these arent power chord riffs..90% of the song is guitar and keyboard linear passages.

The spirit carries on is a solo in a 12/8 and is very modular

btw, this is just from the SFAM album

and if you listened to images and words, there really arent any bluesy solos, Petrucci is a very modular player.

And for the record DT doesnt try to be a crazy prog band like Cynic, Spiral Architect or Spastic Ink. They take their cues from old school prog like Rush, and YES. If you are judging DTs work on their latest album then you are missing out.

peace.

I'm actually judging DT by their images and Words album. I bought it and listened to it about 5-6 times before selling it. It was truly awful. As much as I loathe Slipknot, I would rather listen to their BS about how much the world sucks than this DT wanking. Just my opinion, although Rahul from www.chedsey.com seems to agree at least

personally i don't like the older DT so much....they are musically amazing but i just hate labries voice...it's better on cd 1 of six degrees of inner turbulence....glass prison and great debate are great imo....but well....i like them because they have balls and labrie sings not that high!

All that might be fair but keep in mind that i dont actually think its blues, it was just an example on how using a 4/4 based signature or some thing among those lines doesnt sounds as good. I know he is a modular player and his melodies, speed an technique are very impresive indeed, i just think i need to hear more songs like that dance of eternity one that you mention, i guess i runned into other kinds of songs. The point it still clear because there are some songs were they really tune down on the time signature madness to solo, but maybe is not as bad as i thought if not all songs are like that granted.

i can't get over them. GODS.

i don't know why you all don't like the vox either. i luv em.

yes, true, but check out his whiny vocals on the glass prison. the moment he says something like "...leaving the glass prison behind meeeeeeeeeee..." now that sucks UNIVERSALLY!

exactly, soul4raziel.

I feel like I've discussed DT in like 3 threads recently.....check through the old posts and I think you'll find this topic already. It's mind boggling to me that anyone can like the newer stuff more than the old. Get Images and Words and Awake. Do NOT get the newest one for it is utter shit compared to the old. A Change of seasons is just one 23 min song and is NOT overrated, but sensationally bombass. Did I see someone actually reccomend "The Great Debate" among DT's impressive catalogue of spectacular songs?!??!?! I feel enraged to the point of wanting to kick someone's ass. This is their worst song on their second worst cd. Holy crap. Hahaha
lol i think it is among their best songs..sure there is less flashy playing but it is such an emotional song...i guess its kinda catchy so some may not like it for that
some other good songs:
Pull me under
strange deja vu
fatal tradegy
home
the last song on sfam(cant think right now)
misunderstood
dissapear
war inside my head
the test that stumped them all
(yeah i know the last 2 are supposed to be part of one song but i think that the 8 tracks that make up 6 degrees all sound seperate so that it is kinda funny they are considered to be one song)

"We know you can play the guitar, but shit, don't shove it in our face. Showoff." Why not? How else would you even know they could play that well? Jealous or modest? ;)

The vocals on some of the songs can pierce my brain, but I can't deny how well they play live on "Live At The Marquee".

Bombay Vindaloo, dreamlord! WANK WANK WANK!

heh.. I really like the vocals too.. granted.. he might get a bit too high live and sounds annoying... (but that still doesn't ruin the impression for me).. but on the studio versions he's great IMO...

wank wank wank? the guys know when to step back and to be selective...

but I guess this thread is lost anyhow... I like 'em anyway...
