I program my drums in Guitar Pro 5 and I was wondering what the best way to set each drum's dynamic to. I usually have everything set to 'fff' but it makes it sound real fake. I have no idea where to start but usually I have kick, snare, splash cymbal, crash cymbal and some toms. Can anybody that knows what the hell I'm talking about give me some advice?

If you import the midi to Cubase you can use a preset to randomise the velocity of all or of selected hits. You can also set how low and how high a velocity is the limit for this process. This is just a basic way to make them sound a bit more real. Other than that you can try making every second hit on fast parts a bit more quiet. You'll have to experiment with velocities and keep editing 'till it sounds more real.

Yeah, I use the random velocity thing in Cubase. I generally keep the snare/kick hits pretty high in velocities, so the sound doesn't change much during normal beats. The toms get a little more variation, and the overheads get to slide up and down a lot, which really helps them sound more natural.

Overall it really helps to try and think like a drummer, such as thinking "If I was playing a blast beat at 16th notes at 250bpm, would I be smacking the shit out of the snare?" and realising the answer is "No fucking way! I'd be hitting softer, otherwise I'd pass out".

Very good point! Something I sometimes overlook.
