Drum Mics?

Kick - Audix D6 - $200
Snare - Audix i5 - $100
Toms - SM57 (x3) - $300

If you want, you can use just two Tom mics by using one on floor tom and then micing both the high and mid tom with one SM57.

Hey, welcome Pete - first off, this would be better suited for the equipment section of the forum, and you'll find a lot of answers to your questions (including this one) by searching using the methods in the FAQ Sticky on the main page. That being said, I think the most cost effective solution would be Shure SM57's/SM58's on the snare and all the toms (or an Audix i5, as Sloan mentioned), an Audix D6 in the kick, and a pair of inexpensive small-diaphragm condensers (such as Audio Technica AT3031's) for OH's. It'll put you above $500, but it'll hold you for awhile. Good luck!

i have heard the Samson 8 mic kit at a show and i was impressed with them and i bought some for the studio and i like them....as a matter of fact i am in the process of moving my studio but another member wanted to here some samples so when i get settled in i will be posting some sample of those mics.

Here are the most common ones I've used for toms:

- Sennheiser e604, they have nice bottom end on the sound, attached with a static clip
- Beyerdynamic Opus 88/89, they have better sounding defition because more attack, but a lot less bottom end on the sound than e604, attaches with a moving clamp. Also the gooseneck is quite fragile in my opinion.
- Shure SM57, its pretty much something between those two, has decent amount of attack and bottom end, but is a bitch to use because of the bulky size and you have to use stands for them.
- Sennheiser MD421, the ultimate sounding tom mic, downsides are that they pretty much arent "budget" as they cost ~3 times more, are bulky as hell, the adapter snaps really easily and you need a stand for them.
The first three cost ~100, MD421 ~300. I also have used all of these for snare (bottom and top) and they all work very nicely, but I prefer Shure SM57 or Audix i5

The kick mic depends on what kind of stuff the band is playing. Here are some of the common ones:
- AKG d112 works pretty much for everything, but because of the very low amount of attack its not that great for rock/metal
- Shure b52 works pretty much for everything, only downside is the awful sounding attack
- Audix d6 works pretty much for everything except some softer music, has a lovely attack for rock/metal
- Sennheiser e901 and Shure beta 91 works pretty much only for metal and rock (thats why I have one e901 myself). They have so much attack that you don't really have to boost them anywhere. Just scoop the mud off, add gate+comp and its a done sound. The bonus point is that you don't need a stand for them, as you put them in bottom of the drum.
- Beyerdynamic Opus 51 doesn't work alone at all because its only like *TIK*TIK*TIK*, but can be good for giving clarification of the attack with some other mic that gives it the bottom end
The price ranges from 150-250.

edit: I also have to say, that if you are really on tight budget and live in Europe, check Thomann for these:
T.Bone CD55 is a copy of Sennheiser e604, 25€
T.Bone MB75 is a copy of Shure SM57, 35€
T.Bone MB85 is a copy of Shure SM58, 25€
T.Bone EM700 is a copy of Röde NT55 (IIRC), 29€

Hope it helps,
- ahj

Any one any experience with the t.bone ones???If there decent,at that price they're a steal...

I've had 3 of the MB75's and I must admit that you really can't tell the difference from the SM57 when live, in studio maybe. Would've propably bought the CD55's except that the clip looks really suspicious. I currently have three e604's, five SM57's and a matched pair of Röde NT5. But I must admit that this set looks decent for the price (125€), if you add one MB75 (35€) and the matched EM700 pair (49€), you're pretty much done for ~200€: http://www.thomann.de/gb/t-bone_dc_1000.htm

That was a really nice post. Thank you ahjteam!

no problem, glad I could help
