Now these drums were done in my front room, very small (4m*3m), there is some treatment, but I got to say I am very happy with the results.

Snare - top audix i5, bottom sm 57 (pointing away from the snares)
Kick - audix d6
Overheads - NT5'S
Toms- AKG c418's

Mackie Onyx 1640, Sonar Producer 7

No room microphone as I had no extra stand

Processing was pretty straight forward, reverb (plate buss), eq (subtractive), comp (fast release, med attack), and alot of gating on the snare (no gating on kick drum). I used alot of slate VCC as well. There are still issues with my room, but considering I only charge $200/song for tracking and mixing, I think it is getting some good sounds.

I will post whole song when it gets done.

I would love to know what people think (levels are very low as I like to keep everything below the red :) ) I know some people will say it is pointless without the rest of the song, but I just wanted to share these results that I have been getting in a small room with limited gear.

I hope everyone has a wonderful christmas!!!!!!

It sounds awesome. I might bring the overheads closer to center. They sound unnaturally wide. The reverb has a distinct pitch to where it sounds like the snare is playing notes. It's like "Beep, boop, beep, bap"

That might be part of the realness and sound fine in a mix though.

Sounds good, only thing I'd watch for next time is tom bleed. There's a lot of cymbals in those!

Thanks guys, there should not be any bleed in the toms as I cut everything out apart from the toms, I will have to check that.

Yea the snare needs more work, but will have to wait until the rest is added in

And to the "lol" comment. Takes me about 2 days to track one song, then I take about a day to mix one song so that = $200 for 24 hours, therefore hourly rate equals $8.33/hour um and for a person who has been doing this for around 5 years now (not my full time job), I don't think that is too dear and that does not include revision of songs......

Sounds decent.

Yeah dude 200$ a song is cheap as fuck.

I charge that, and people don't believe me when I tell them my rates.

kick is nice, snare sounds killer, toms sound like
somebody is punching giant baloons or something,
OH's are wide, very wide, sounds a little bit strange to me.
good job man!

some time ago, i did a 5 track EP for 38€ and a a few beer btw!

cheers
S.

Thanks

Yea I have recordeed E.PS for free when I started, so only fair to actually get a little money now:). Soultrash what would you suggest to do about the toms? Would like to get more warmth, but it isn't happening for me at the moment

Regardless if the toms have everything in between cut out, there is still a alot of cymbals in the toms when they do hit.

Loving the weight on the kick drum. Only thing I can complain about it the almost unrealistic feel in headphones. I feel like the toms are panned too wide. It's super tight, though I really dig the muscle in it.

I dig the kick, not a fan of the snare verb but the overall tone is pretty sweet. I'd recommend some moongels for your toms.

What he said. Kick is good, I don't like the snare verb and I don't like the toms at all.

I can't help you with the toms though, I can't process real drums myself either...
