Not sure how much attention this thread will receive but why not.

I love the shit out of this record all round but have always liked Shannons drums sound on this record. There's not a single bone to pick with this record.

I'm working on a project right now that would benefit from this kind of sound A LOT and was wondering whether anyone has achieved close results to the sound before? and what you may have been using? I'm actually trying to see if I can make a preset within Superior Drummer for this kind of thing(Yes working with the on board mixer sucks.)

I'm really after a good high pitched snare sound out of this.I'm more used to mixing beefier snares but the music I'm working on really calls for something like this.

Even if you can recommend certain samples to work with in Superior for this to be mixed via my DAW I''d appreciate it as I really don't feel I'm getting close at all.

If anyone can offer any kind of help it would awesome :)

yup, you definetly would need shannon haha. But i do love the relationship between the bass and the kick drum, they both sound super heavy without being invasive.

Oh definitely. I'm not coming in as a guy who doesn't understand that the player is a huge part of the sound and shannon fucking destroys it. I'm aiming to get close not perfect.

I have to agree with the relationship between kick and snare. In my experience the snare usually ends up being covered and loosing some of its high end crack and sounding like a ball of low end from the kick has clouded it during blasts. but this is definitely not the case on this record.

There's already been like three threads about this. Here's the link to the original one where dude explains the drums recording process and the custom samples he used:

For the lazy:
There is zero tom replacement on the album. I really dig the naturalness of the toms etc...

Snare sample is a sample i made of a joey jordison snare, believe it or not. And the kick is a dw 22" kick that is one of my favorite samples. We've used that one a few times. That kick sample was made with a d6 and subkick through a 1081 and api then i ran the sample through a pultec for additional eq. Wish i could remember what beater i used on that one, its a big part of the sound. I think it was a wood beater... but not sure.

Also there is alot of real snare on this drum mix... especially on the blasts. I do wish we would have automated a bit more real snare up in the rolls, but i'll live, heh.

Second post in. I agree though, I LOVE the way that record sounds. And what a godsend it would be to have a drummer like shannon to record as opposed to the usual crop of utter crap.

^ Don't blow 300 on a Yamaha. Just get a ~6" speaker (woofer) and wire a TS jack to it. I did, perfect 40Hz thump. Cost me all of... nothing (had the shit laying around) and is basically the same thing as the Yam, minus a drum shell around it. Unless you don't like money, of course :p As far as using it for fast doubles, automation is your friend, volume and also HP.

^^^ That's how yamaha got the idea for that. People have been putting ns10 woofers in front of kicks for a long ass time. Yamaha just put a shell around it. I haven't been using mine much lately, but lots of people seem to like them.
