Ok I'm aiming for a snare tone like this clip. It has a big round bottom end that really sounds cool, yet has some nice bottom snares rattling. Hard to explain really so just listen.

I'm really struggling even getting something close to this sound with Slate samples. I know this is not the best snare sound in the world but I really need something like this for a mix I'm working on. So please any advice.....

Sounds like the snares are pretty loose.. which is something I probably wouldn't expect to find in metal/rock snares. I'd pick the Slate sample with the loosest snares and use that with a fair amount of room. I can't be more specific cos I don't own Slate.

Yea the bottom mic is doing quite a bit there. Also there is this just roundness or fullness about it that I love and struggle to get. Ive noticed some productions by Joey Sturgis (joeymusicguy) have a similar sound. So if you see this Joey help a brother out please......

Ive been through the Slate snares and I just end up with a boomy snare when i try and get that sound. I'm totally stuck in a rut here and mentally its killing my mixing.

I think i got something close....

I ended up using the swingerland 70's snare from dfhs 2.0 cause i was having no luck with slate samples. Also this mix is far from done as I'm really just working on the drums and have not even touched the vocals or bass and just kinda threw some eq on the guitar buss. I also slammed the fuck out of the mix to see what mastering will do to the snare.

:err:

Honestly dude, that Acacia Strain snare is :puke:, I've always thought so. I understand what it is that you like about it and kind of what you're aiming for, but what you've got going already sounds a lot better to my ears. A little more compression smack wouldn't hurt, and you could EQ out some of those little ringing tones that I never really enjoy hearing, but those are more issues of personal taste.

Ok here is a updated mix of the whole song. I added another snare sample and smashed it to get some more pop or attack. Then i lowered the swingerland sample some. I used a q10 and cut freq on my last post and there was just no way i could cut all the weired ringing freq without cutting to much of the fundamentals of that swingerland sample. So i did my best lowered the sample and blended another. Any better??

Actually the band just listened as I'm posting this and they hate the guitar tone and vocals and also says the mix is way to thin. Whats your guys thoughts on that stuff as well?

I don't hear a problem with the vocals. The guitars sound kind of flubby though. I think the kick is very audibly clipping or something too. It sounds strange.
