Drum Tracking Question

Morgoe.. thanks man that makes alot of sense. never thought to double the track and chop it up on a duplicate track.
Now i just need to do some more research on the overhead phase issues...well i know what the issues are just not sure of the best placement to avoid phasing.Guess i better get digging and see what i can find out.:Smokin:

all you need is a phase reverse on your preamps.

listen to your overheads and fade in snare+kick - what happens? is it getting fuller with alot of bottom as they are equally gained, then you might be right. flip the phase on snare and kick and listen to what has happened - if nothing's happened in sound = the mics aren't cool with each other, maybe you like what you are hearing, but there's definately space for improvement by positioning the mics in another way.

hard to describe in words, but wiht a phase reverse you'll easily hear what i mean.
just mess around with placement and you'll find some sweet spots.
and alway control with the phase reverse.

back in the days, when i had no phase reverses on my console i taped a lot of kits that had phase issues and i always wondered, why i didn't have any low mids and bass in my kit - now i know, phase reverse is one of your best friends when tracking drums.

hope that helps

First off let me say thank you for all of your input. . I would love to be able to charge but i am in no way at the level that i think i should be paid for recording them. It seems like the overall suggestion is to go with kick snare and overheads. If all else fails i will program whatever i have to. I was very honest with them and told them that they will not be getting pro quality so i have some room for error.

Scorpio...that is the exact interface i am looking to get as soon as i can afford to.

Im still not 100% clear on how to replace toms from the Oh tracks but i will do my best.

thanks again guys i really appreciate all of your time. :headbang:
here's something you can do the next time you get the opportunity to recording a band. if they are willing to pay have them track drums at another studio, one that can handle multiple inputs. bring the drum files back to your studio and finish all other tracking duties. if drums were tracked properly you'll have fun while learning how to track to multitracked drums.
