Drum verb

I was wondering if you could offer any tips on applying reverbs to drums, in particular snare. I use mostly the Waves Truverb or Ren all though I've had descent luck with the Dverb of all things. I usually end up gating the verb, but I often find the reverb ends up "softening" the attack of the snare and washing things out (I'm using aux sends to a dedicated verb channel). I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing that enables a drum to have a shitload of verb, without losing the initial impact.

I use DVerb on the drums all the time. It reminds me of the old yamaha SPX's as it's a bit crap sounding on it's own but it works well in the mix because it's not a soft.
I'll usually go with a medium room setting of around 1.2/1.6 seconds and go from there really.
