HOW DO TUNE DRUMZ? ¯\(°_o)/¯

okay... so me and another guy from this forum (zvish) have a generic deathcore band. Our drummer is ok, technically speaking, but he can`t hear if his drums are tuned or if they sound good, or not. So we have a plan that we`ll make him buy new drumheads and tune them correctly. We need something for toms and snare. He has this set: http://www.pacificdrums.com/images/FS/k-FS-Natural-Charcoal-Burst.jpg with one additional 10inch tom.

So, any tips about good drumheads for this drumset, and mostly about tuning the drumz would be really helpful:)

I actually followed this video a few days ago and had some good results:

It's actually better if a guitarist does it because you have to have a musical ear and hear the pitch of the drums (besides, the drummer is usually too busy drooling on himself to perform such complex tasks as tuning drums)

strasznie smieszny ten dziadzio :) A wiesz jak stroic tomy tzn, w stosunku do siebie i werbla? kwintami kwartami? w ktora strone? Np werbel gora do B, najnizszy tom B oktawe nizej i potem tomy w gore kwintami?

Not really a fair statement..... There are plenty of guitarists who don't exactly have a good ear for tuning.

No wczoraj stestowalem metode dziadzia, ale starczylo mi czasu tylko na rack toma i zagadal pinknie naglosniony. Nastroilem go poprostu to dzwieku ktory sobie nucilem, gore i dol do tego samego. Pewnie jakby nastroic pod konkretna nute to bylo by lepiej, tu juz czas zaczac eksperymentowac.

To the other guys: I was just joking, i love drummer jokes and making fun od drummers.

Drum tuning confuses me because all I hear are all those fucked overtones competing for dominance. When he tuned that top snare skin it sounded like turds screwing.

Press fairly lightly with your finger in the centre of the skin, it can help to remove some of the overtones. I also find if you tap with your finger, instead of with a stick, the tonic comes out a lot clearer (no need for the finger in the middle then).

I really started noticing how shit my tuning was when I started playing xylophone.
Also I've also found out that I went way to low on tuning. Now with the high-tom I actually start on a pretty high note. Which makes the spacing throughout all the toms sound so much nicer and also fits really good into the music.

Watch that video of Bob Gatzen, it's just the same for toms.
