Drummer CAN'T play with a click... FML!

Put some SSL on the click. It will fix your problem ;)

Edit:

No but on a more serious note, just speed or slow down the click till the song feels comfortable for him to play to and he can stay on the click for 4 or 5 bars. If you have to, punch the drums, I know it sucks but sometimes you have no choice! I am in the same boat with a drummer right now. Luckily his hands stay on time, its his feet we are having a problem with. So I am doing all the songs without kicks and going to have him re-track with the just the kicks later. PRACTICE PADS FTW!!

I've recorded bands without clicks plenty of times. It's far from the end of the world and as long as they're decent takes with no crazy bad time changes. Once every thing else gets tracked you'd not notice. It can still be tight and you can still edit stuff with no problems.

I pretty much never get to do pre prod with bands though, only a few and they were the best projects where the bands really cared about their music anyways. Got a few projects coming up where I'm going to insist on it, even if they won't pay for it.

If the drummer can't play with the click while there's a tight scratch guitar there he must really suck. In that case I'd tell him to take a few days and give him the mp3 of what he'll be tracking to. Tell him to go home and get comfortable with it. Although he should have been doing this between pre prod and tracking anyways.
Had one drummer get a click for the songs 2 weeks before tracking having never played with a click before. Came in and nailed all the songs in a few takes, no scratch guitar or anything and I barely had to do any editing. He was just comfortable with it

Just fucking around really. He gets the joke, we get the joke and everyone laughs. Theirs no hostility, its all in fun :)

I would be the first fucker to buy him a beer for being a good sport if we ever met in person.

I will be out in the vegas area relatively soon too. we'll have to make that happen

I gotta be honest here guys, why is it such a big deal not to track to a click? Arent there millions of great albums that werent tracked to a click??
I know tracking to a click makes it easier for the engineer quantize and everything, but even then, havent those same badass albums not even had the drums quantized and locked to a grid??
