That's right, a drummer I was tracking hit my sm57 with his stick and now it rattles like a bitch when tracking drums.

I duct taped the little spinable cap, and now it doesn't make as much noise, but it is still there!:erk: Makes me think something has knocked loose inside that little cap or something???:hypno:

Anybody had this problem and know an easy fix ???

I finally caught the end of mine the other day... but, I only chipped the plastic end... and didnt do any real damage otherwise.... I was happy about that... lol

get a rubber o-ring to put around the gap between the cap and mic. If you can't find on that fits exactly, get 2 smaller ones. Make sure they are nice and snug. All my new 57's rattle and ended up putting them on all my 57's even the old ones for good measure. I tried tape but it seemed to kill some low end response.

isn't that just part of doing business?

also, take it a part and determine what's wrong. 57s are very easy to dismantle.

call the drummer and tell him that he have to bought to you a new one, i would do that for sure, and i never would record that drummer again in my studio :)

all my 57s rattle or have the loose cap. i thought he was talking about something different.

I like that O-Ring idea.

Ummm, ok, here's the obvious question everyone else missed: You're tracking heavy rock, right? Where is your spare 57? You should always have four or five of these kicking around for precisely the reason you mentioned.

I hate to sound like a bitching mother, but come on, you should know better!

BTW, best of luck with the repair.

I do have Three 57's. But I just was trying to see if anyone else had this problem and was able to fix it?? That is all.

I will try the O Ring idea today and see if that works:u-huh:

Ok, good stuff. Sorry, but it sounded like your 57 bought it & you were screwed.... that's the crappy thing about forums, it's very easy to get the wrong idea.

One idea that might help you in the future: Take a quarter, a sharpie, & draw a circle with it in the exact center of the snare (I'm assuming it was the snare mic that he hit,I could be wrong) & tell him to hit there & only there. If a drummer has a target to hit, he'll subconciously lock into it & hit it even when he's not looking. I've seen it happen many times & I've yet to lose a snare mic due to a drummer's bad hit. Kudos to Max Norman for a great idea! I stole it out of the Megadeth home video they put out for Youthanasia.

most drummers are too stupid to consistantly hit any drum at the center! Just kidding..... But no, seriously.
