My brother is trying to say that metal is all power chords and i was wonder what exactly power chords are.

First, your brother is wrong. Much of metal is powerchords, but not all. Listen to Opeth for instance.

A power chord is just a 5th chord. An easy example is an E5.

Punk is mostly all power chords.
Metal is a bit more complex.

It's ok to use one once in awile, but if you using them a lot that's gay. Use a F barchord in sted, that is were it is at.

No, power chords aren't exactly the end all and be all of metal... tho some bands are/were big on them. Some Doom Metal, Immortal...

Most metal bands use power chords a lot,at least in the rhythm guitar.This does not render the harmony simple and tedious.The Keyboard and bass also add to it.The only reason they are used so much is that if you play bar chords,for example, with distortion in general it will sound horrible.
