HEy guys I know this has probably been discussed but I am lazy what can I say. So yeah is the 89 really just an 85 with a coil tap. I find it hard to believe that when it is set to sound like a humbucker that it would still sound exactly like an 85. So yeah before I spend some money on this pick-up I would like to hear what you guys think. Thanks.

I have used the EMG 89 in the bridge of a Strat and it sounded close enough to the EMG 85 for me. It sounds much nicer in the neck though.

It's got a touch higher resonant frequency, but sounds essentially the same. You'd never notice unless you had it in the exact same guitars, side by side, and even then, you wouldn't hear it in a blind test.
