I've always thought it was a tad unfair to just describe Enchant as a band somewhere half way between Rush, Saga and Marillion, like it is written in so many reviews that didn't really get into the band all that much.
Sure, there are riffs in the vein of Ian Crichton (especially on ABOTW) here and gnarly rhythms as well as subtle, "dirty" guitar work à la Rush there, but there's MUCHO more to this band than that, don't you think?
For example, I can hear some Mindcrime-era Queensryche in the opening riff of "Sinking Sand" (compare the thumping bass, in sync with the drums), right next to the well-known inspration Doug & co. have drawn from Alternative Rock and Grunge - a thing no other Prog band I know has ever done - over the course of the years.
But now for my question and the actual intent of this topic... there are those sections in certain Enchant songs I would hardly be able to describe to somebody not familiar with the band. Where did the inspiration for the tight, busy, sometimes borderline out-of-control middle sections of tracks like "Enchanted", "Blind Sided" or "Unter the Sun" come from?
It's not some band I could put my finger on, that's for sure... those section don't quite sound like Rush, or Yes, or ANY OTHER band I know. What do you think?
Another question... this one's for you, Ed: I totally love your style of tapping on the bass, which is absolutely crucial to, say, the intro of "Under Fire", the outro of "Sinking Sand" or the middle section of "Hold The Wind".
However, if I'm not mistaken, "Under Fire" is the first Enchant song to actually feature bass tapping... when did you decide to implement this technique into your repertoire?
