Does anyone know if any Engl tube preamps (current or past) sound similar to the Savage 120? I love that upper-midrangey grind and gritty presence they have, but I have neither room nor money for a Savage, and besides, cranking it up would cause problems with my roommates in a big hurry. :p

I believe that currently the only two preamps you can buy are based on the Thunder/Screamer preamp and the SE. So no, as for past preamps I'm not sure. There was a Savage 60 head made at one point, maybe keep an eye out for one on the ebay. Checking the German ebay is probably your best bet.

EDIT: I notice they have the Midi Preamp E580 too, I have no idea what this is, I think it may be relatively new. I've never heard that any of their preamps are Savage based however.

e580 preamp is relatively... old :)
It is very expensive, so if someone cannot afford Savage then e580 also is out of question.
e530 is not based on screamer pre (according to schematics, as noted by one of russian amp builders, he thinks that screamer pre is inferior).
