Engl vs. Engl?

Can't say I find my Powerball to be muddy. :err:.

And it sounds pretty "metallic" to me.

I think I'd love basically every ENGL. The ones I've played are the Blackmore/Fireball/Powerball.

But going by what I've heard the Savage is impressive and you can't go wrong with it. If it's good enough for Nordy then it's good enough for me. :heh:

Damn Billy Hydes for not stocking the Savage/SE's! :ill:

damn half the united states for not stocking ANY Engls.. although I think the only reason I don't have one, and a huge credit bill is because I can't just walk into Daddy's Junky Music, or Guitar Center and buy one.. heh heh.

Jesus christ, that's absolutely absurd...a new Dual Recto is like $1,600 US in these parts, whereas a Savage is $2,300 (and frankly, that seems to be an accurate representation of the quality of one vs. the other)

If your interested in the savage but think its a bit pricey then the Blackmore may be for you. Its based on the savage and is basically just a stripped down version of it.

Dont let the name on it fool you. It can do heavy modern rhythms really well. Check out rocksolid amps web site. Its definately voiced more like the savage too. More mids and brighter than the fireball / powerball. There is actually a video on youtube comparing the Blackmore to the Powerball. IMO, the Blackmore sounds just as heavy but a bit more articulate and clearer

The shared eq puts some people off but its actually not a problem with the amp. At least i've never had an issue with it. Anyway, if you want a cheaper amp you have to make some sacrifices :)

I did a search on this forum and found someone's recording of the blackmore playing master of puppets.. it may have been thier settings.. but I didn't like it at all. to scratchy.

on the subject of cost.. if it costs $1200us for a savage in Australia.. how much would it cost for shipping to the US from there?! heh heh :loco:

Ok i thought this would be a good thread to post it in, can anyone tell me what the two engl amps dimmu have in the studio as can be seen here http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JXLs18JviIE at around 5:26 or something, the one on top looks like an SE as far as i can tell, but whats the one underneath? I assume they're both similar in tone...just minus the options of the SE, and hopefully cheaper...

The Savage had quite a different sound, less bass, more mids, absolutely perfect for leads (!!!), not as convincing for rhythm. Sounded more like a rock amp. That said, for recording the character of this amp might be just right, and we all know what they say about the gain...

I have to totally disagree with 5th Horseman there as I think the opposite. The Savage is perfect for heavy rhythm and a bit fizzy/on the thin side for leads. Obviously this may be my setup, but I always preferred a Bogner Extasy or old Fender amps for recorded leads (I like a round, neckpickup, bluesy kind of tone).

Here are some recordings of my Savage for you to check out rhythm tone:

First two are: Les Paul > Savage 120 > Marshall 30th Anniversary 4x12 Cab (GT75) > SM57 > Mindprint Envoice > M-Audio Delta 66

http://www.faderhead.com/blogs/mp3/sm57_engl_savage_test_02.mp3

Next two are: B.C. Rich Warlock USA > Savage 120 > FX-Out > Presonus Firepod > Voxengo Impulse Plugin with Guitarhack's Impulses

I once played a Powerball at rehearsal and remember being okay with it. I never played Invader or SE ...

Hope this helps. :headbang:

Yeah ENGL's are pretty expensive in the US.

Down here you can get a Savage for about $1500AUD (1200US) cheaper than a Dual Rec. o_O

I think it would be worth the trip down under for that price! And I'll bring a dual rec with me! I personally think the powerball is great. Put an 808 in front of it and dial it in. IMO There's no better tone! Musician's friend now deals Engl and VHT!

The first samples sound great, but i'm surprised how good the second samples (with impulses) are sounding (the last one especially) ! To me they sound even better than the SM57 takes samples !

What are your Savage settings when you're using the FX out ? (i tried the preamp out of my ENGL SE once but it sounded very lifeless and i didn't know shit about impulses at that time, so i might reconsider it now that i've heard your amazing samples)

Very good clips Smy1.
Do you use/have tried a tubescreamer in front of your savage?
Do you have stock tubes in it?

No, I have never owned a tubescreamer (or similar device). The first clips (into SM57) have the stock tubes from 1996 in it!!! They were completely shredded (although soundwise I didn't think there was a big difference, just the ringing in the tubes made me go nuts). I had them replaced a little later and the impulse-clips are with Ruby Tubes, I think. I don't know exactly what they put in, but the tech is good, so I let him do what he thought was best ...

The settings are:

LEAD CHANNEL:

Gain: 1 o'clock
Lead: 1 o'clock
Lead boost off
Contour on
Bass: 12 o'clock
Middle: 11 o'clock
Treble 2 o'clock
Hi Balance: 4 o'clock
Rough/Smooth: off
Lead Volume: 3 o'clock
Presence: 12 o'clock

Nothing special, really

Those are the same settings on both clips and they sound COMPLETELY undergained when played on their own. Quadtracked there is quite enough gain ...

The reason why the impulses may sound better to you is because I spent probably 5 seconds putting the mic in front of the cab. It was just a little test and I really didn't care at all about messing with the placement. Don't ask me where exactly I put the mic, haha. Somewhere near the cone ... :loco:

thanks for the settings man !

One last question : Do you use those settings for both "SM57" takes and "FX out" takes ? or only for the FX out ones ?

Nope, different settings! I forgot, sorry!

For the SM57 I used the Lead channel with these settings (these are not the o'clock settings, but the units on the amp!):

Gain: 7
Lead Boost: Off
Lead: 4
Contour: On
Bass: 5
Middle: 1
Treble: 6
Hi Balance: 5,5 (never figured out what this does, haha)
Rough: Off
Lead Volume: 10
Presence: 7
Depth Boost: On

Sounds very boomy, so I had to cut the lows up to 93hz in the mix later.

Hope this helps! :headbang:
