Enter Sandman

hey there! I introduced myself ages ago and then faded into lurker status in the interim. :( Sorry. Did some stuff with 7th and Jim(both are KILLER vocalists!) and still lurk around here occasionally.

Saw the post about karoake tracks and downloaded Enter Sandman. I've been trying to improve my vocal abilities and this was the first cover song I've tried to do in a manner close to the original. I'm still working on it.... was reminded how hard it is to do note for note covers while in the process... but have a rough(really rough... like super rough) mix up on my myplay account. Even put in a placement Hammett homage solo(too lazy to work on the real one.) Was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on getting closer to the real thing - tonally and as far as EQ and/or Reverb settings.

the myplay login info is my email: noble_savage_2000@yahoo.com and the password is werewolfadam. If any of you could offer suggestions, it would really really be appreciated.

dang, now you guys have given me cover fever. ;)

I stayed low due to lack of vocal ability and not much patience at perfecting cover tunes... but after this Enter Sandman deal, I'm deciding that cover tunes are just the ticket to easing my current playing slump.

Yea, I think we'd all prefer to be in full-time working bands, but like most aspiring musicians it's too hard to work, ahve a family/home life, and have a full-time band. I guess it's what makes the IMG thing so much fun for us, because we can work on tunes, even original stuff, but not have to deal with the schedule and headaches of having a working band. It's more fun than practicing/recording alone, you still have some interaction with the other players, and you have a group of interested players to share it all with! It's appealing in that way.

Hi NobleSavage. I tried to access your account but it wouldn't let me. Sorry I can't give you any feedback.

Holy Crap you have a lot of tracks in there Noble Savage!
I got access..I dunno why it not work for Hyde.

I took a listen. Are you using IMG tracks here?

So...the thing I noticed about your mix was that it sounded muddy...like it was sampled at a low rate when you converted it. Was this intentional? Its tough to compare it vs the original because it kinda sound like listening to the song through a pillow..or something.

Mr. Hyde: make sure and put the underscores between the Noble the Savage and the 2000, that's the main problem that's popped up in accessing that account. I should have used a different email in setting it up.

7th: Yeah, I've seen how you've been car guy! very cool! and good luck on getting the pc up and working good again. The Lycanthrope thing is pretty much at a standstill, but I've been doing another thing... just been completing the songwriting on it - it's the ReignmakeR stuff on the myplay account.

Rabies: I used the IMG track for Sandman - the rest of the stuff there is either mine or probably patsrule, a really prolific amazing guitarist.

The mix is horrible... very muddy and I'm not sure why... that's one of the things I'm hoping you guys can help me with. My mixes sound good on my computer and in my car... but when I listen to them anywhere else, they sound like mush. I'm using CEP for the vocal recording on that track... the vocals are probably muddy due to my using my v-amp as a pre-amp... it's not a very trebly device. The actual Karoake track sounds the same as the one with my vocals... so it's probably the muddy vocals that you are referring too. I'll try and find a better setting on that.

edited part:
uploaded a second, less muddy although maybe too trebly version.
end edited part.
Thanks for the replies! Lemme try again.

NobleSavage I got a copy of your 2nd mix. The Good: "Now I lay me down to sleep" You do that part really well.
The bad:
It sounds like you are having problems singing the high notes and your pitch fluctuates quite a bit. I know you weren't trying for perfection anyway, and the track you had to work with isn't the best either.:)

I'm not cutting you any slack for that solo though. You obviously can play, and you mention that you were too lazy to figure out Hammets version...It sounds like it! :p

Good Job!:)

Ec do you know if there is a separate drum track still around for Sandman? I think I might like to have the drum track so I can make myself a version just for kicks.

Mr. Hyde: Thanx for the comments! The high note part is no surprise. lol The pitch part isn't really either, but could you point out a section that really stands out, so I can tell what you are hearing and I can work specifically on correcting it.

as far as the solo goes, it's indeed lame and a first taker, but the track sounded wrong without something in there. I was too lazy to learn Kirk's solo mainly because I'm not a fan of Kirk's leads. Maybe on the next mix I'll throw in the solo to Holy Diver, one I like. LOL Again, thanx for the comments! I'm learning to sing by default and any help is definitely appreciated.

I noticed on the pitch problem mostly on the sleep with one eye open parts and the exit light enter night parts.

I'll wait till I hear what the solo to Holy Diver over the Sandman riff sounds like before I comment on that.

Thanks Ec. I doubt I can get it through email now because I switched ISP's and I'm on that one service that starts with an A.

I opened an account on myplay if you want to post it there.

Email:jcfbff@hotmail.com
and the standard password.
