I played the Mini and the Full size at NAMM and honestly I liked the MINI more. The big one has too much head room in the power section IMHO. The mini's power tubes work a bit harder and its got a really nice push in the Mids cause of this.
I got to talk with Chris for a while on Saturday morning before too many people piled in and he talked about that they changed quite a few capacitors and modified the tone stack to make the mini sound like its bigger brother. He let me open them both up pretty hot as well which was nice of him.
I played 2 fenders, my epiphone classic quilt, 3 Jacksons through it and 3 of the EVH guitars through the mini and here is the run down.
Strats with humbuckers:
Maple - Sounded good through the amp lack of low end in the guitar itself was really prevalent through the amp.
Alder - Sounded flat and lifeless compared to the other guitars I tried.
Epiphone: My 2nd fave of all the guitars I played through it. You could really hear the tone of the guitar shine through the amp. This was the case with ALL of the guitars and the amp reacted differently dependent upon the guitar being plugged in.
Jackson:
Soloist - Sounded good similar to the strats but with a bit more punch
Broderick - 3rd fave of the bunch, the Broderick really came to life through this amp, tons of pick attack and chunk.
Randy V - Similar to the solist with less lows, kinda like the maple strat just with more balls.
EVH:
EVH Custom - THIS GUITAR AND AMP COMBO IS AMAZING! i have NEVER been a fan of EVH Guitars but OH MY FUCKING GOD, this combination of guitar and amp work so well together its INCREDIBLE. I have never felt an amp as much as I did on this guitar. The fucking thing responds to EVERY nuance, and I mean every one, even down to the angle and gauge of pick you are using.
The other 2 EVH guitars were similar to the Epiphone Les Paul.
All in all I say Tonally the EVH is amazing, everything from country to metal is in there. The amp is VERY VERY VERY sensitive to your playing style, and it may not be for everyone because of this. The amps is very responsive and full of life even at low volumes it fills a room with sound. Compared to the standard 5150 I would say its similar in the way it sounds but the feels is 180 degree turn around from the standard, its as tight or as loose as you want it to be based on how you play.
I still think the price tag is a bit high, but it was probably my FAVORITE amp to play at NAMM, next to the Egnater Vengeance and the Modded Jet City 20H
