EVM12L speakers - any good for recording?

I've asked the same question some time ago...
general consensus was that they're really loud with a flat EQ curve, great for clean sounds, not so much for metal as they can be a bit fizzy

They're really expensive though, even a used 12L is like 200$ or so, so if the cab's cheap get it, gut it and equip it with any speaker you like.

I got a 1x12 Mesa cab that came with a 12L.....can't recall too much detail as this was about 6 years ago. Sounded ok, but I can't really compare it to anything. Blew that sumbitch up eventually. Never seen a speaker actually explode.....

Thanks for the heads up, guys. So far every clip I've heard has sounded awful.

I figure with the price that the cab is going for, I can probably gut the speakers, sell them off in order to cover the cost of the cab, and just load her up with some Chinese V30s. Be interesting to have a Mesa cab with stock V30s... I think Greg did that test a while back, and they did quite well from memory.

Worst case scenario I can just save two of the EVs for a 2x12 to use on clean tones.

They are nice speakers but I wouldn't use them on their own...
I have heard an EVM in a 1x12 and it was not very nice...
Lots of headroom but a bit harsh...
The best way to use them is to combine them with something else...
The best can I have ever heard, also heaviest and most expensive ever, was a Fryette 4x12 with 2 EVM's and 2 Fanes!!!!!!!!!
THE BEST BLOODY TONE EVER!!!!!!!!
It was heavier than a car though...
Even with casters it was impossible to move it...

I probably wouldn't waste my money on that cabinet. Bogner cubes are great 1x12s that come loaded with V30s that record real well.

I actually prefer the Chinese V30s. The Mesa V30s have a fizz to them I'd rather live without. I'm actually working on my own custom cabinet design, but productions have been keeping me too busy to finish it off.
