I've noticed that progressive rock/metal bands not only experiment and push the boundries of music but instruments aswell. Progressive music is starting to become fashionable due the success of fucking awesome bands like Meshuggah, Animals as leaders, or periphery.
Many of the progressive bands use 7 or 8 string guitars which is becoming a mainstream thing. Ibanez starded the whole phenomena supporting orginal bands, and now ESP and Jackson are coming from behind marketing their own 8 string models.
I guess kids pick up the 7 or 8 string guitars easier than before and are slowly changing the game with modern guitars.
