The band did not invent him. He was around before the band, and as sad as it is to say, he will live on after the band...in webmaster Brent's spare room.

This is a good question, I really have no clue how he came about. Back in those days a lot of bands had mascots, Maiden has Eddie and Motley Crue had Alister Fiend, Kiss had themselves...

Before SNL skits made "not" the word of choice for every teenager - thirty something in America around 1990 or so, it was pretty much a New Yawk thing. It was the typical "I couldn't care less" type of slogan you'd expect from New Yorkers - they are the best smart asses in the world. They'd pay you a compliment, then say "not." They'd say the Rangers lost, then say "not." Get it. Good. Anyway, outside of New York it wasn't a mainstream expression (until SNL used it all the time) and Anthrax decided to make the Not Man their smart ass mascot. They kinda gave him the axe when the expression became cliche. His only SoWN era appearance was in the SoWN tv commercial. He completely disappeared for Stomp 442. But, the die hard's clamored, and he came roaring back for Vol. 8 after 5 years of obscurity.

I had a magazine (don't know if I still do) where someone (I think Scott) said that they had a friend who said "NOT" all the time. "Not this, not that."
And I e-mailed Scott about the Notman finger puppet.
