EYES OF FIRE - DISINTEGRATE
Century Media - 2003
By Rodrigo Escandon
Disintegrate is a monster of a 3-song EP from the Orange County band Eyes on Fire formerly known as Shiva and this is just a teaser to their full-length Ashes to Embers that will be released early next year.
The first song is Disintegrate, a chaotic journey encompassing powerful tribal drumming from John Haddad, raspy and shouting singing from bassist Matt Fisher, keyboard sampling courtesy of Ben Smith that add musical depth and dissonant driving guitars from Dan Kaufman and Carey Petersen tie it all together. Hopeless is a gloomy, atmospheric song that is characterized by twin guitar melodies and clean singing that almost sounds like it came from a totally different band. Anyone is a spacy metal composition that alternates from slower melodic parts with clean singing to distorted and heavier parts with harsh singing. Once again it is another song that is totally different from the other two.
At just over 13 minutes, this EP leaves you wanting for more but with the promise of the full-length coming soon that want will be fulfilled in the near future. In the meantime these 3 songs should hold us at bay.
