Can't help you with Sonar, but the basic idea is this:
1: You have drums programmed on a midi track.
2: Normally you would select the midi track's output to EZDrummer, but in this case you make it's outputs both EZD and Battery.
3: The EZD is playing your drums normally.
4: Check the sample cells that are triggered in Battery by different tom hits, kick, snare etc.
5: Load the proper samples into Battery's appropriate cells.
6: Select Battery to output the cells to whatever channels you prefer, eg. kick ch1, snare ch2, toms stereo ch3.
7: Voila!
