Faderport Vs Alphatrack

MetalJonesy

more metal, more booze!!!
Hey yall,

im just wanting something to simplyfy and speed up my transport side of things and for automation purposes.

and basically the title says it all, both will work with my setup, just wondering wether or not the extra £30 is worth it for the alphatrack and the LCD display it has!!

The Guitar World review on both of them was pretty in depth. They gave the FaderPort props on a better feeling fader, but they LCD and ease of use of the alphatrack gave it the upper hand. The alphatrack sounds like the way to go, I may pick one up.

I´d go for the alpha track without a doubt (i´ve considered it in the past but the i bought a bcf2000, so i skipped it)

the one thing that i prefer the faderport over the alphatrack is that the faderport offers bank switching. ill have a long hard think over these next couple of days. but having the lcd display is pretty cool. i just wish t he faderport had a basic lcd on it to display the track you're on!!

I like the alphatrack for almost everything except controlling effects. It's not nearly as fast as a mouse for that. The resolution of the knobs in cubase is worthless, you have to turn them at least 4 times over to get them to pan one way or the other or anything of the sort. This problem only exists in cubase though, it's more than fine for pro tools, actually this thing is nicer in pro tools to use than cubase overall.

It's really nice to have transport controls when your tracking right there though, what's even better than that is the footswitch you can put in (I am sure the faderport probably has it as well) to record enable your stuff.

It's pretty quick to switch from track to track via the buttons on the unit. The undo button is nice as well, thats a smidge quicker than hitting apple + Z. Automating with this thing is ALOT nicer than mouse moves, although again sometimes you got to go back in and tweak things because you didn't get the fade right (but that's not an alphatrack issue).

The other thing I like and use a lot is the track pad at the bottom. Place a finger on it and slide it L or R and you move the play head a little bit, use 2 fingers and you move it a lot. It's nicer than using fast forward or rewind in the controls.

So I say yeah it's great to have but for alot of things a mouse is still faster (EQ and effects). Also just keep in mind that 13 of the buttons are dual function (hit shift on the faderport they do something else).

Won't the track you're controlling be highlighted on screen, though, as if you had clicked on it? That would be good enough for me.

I've been gasing about a small transport controller too lately, but now I'm REALLY waiting for this...

Hmm, a lot going on on that contraption, I wonder how much it'll be...

And has Steinberg ever made a hardware unit before? It'd suck royally if it was Cubase exclusive...

man, i'll be all over that thing if it comes in at less than $500 or so...i'd really prefer to have something with more faders, but i might still have to jump on that one if the price is right

i really wish tascam would come up with a 2nd-gen. version of the US2400, though...anyone who could put a 24-channel controller on the market for around $1000 would clean up

Search youtube for the videa that compares the Faderport and Alphatrack fader movements. Faderport was really slow to respond in comparison. Of course, you don't know any of the details of how the experiment was setup.

I have the alphatrack. You can go to gearslutz.com and buy one used in the classifieds section for well under the price of a new unit. They are solid, and mine works perfectly after using it a lot for months. I use it for automation a ton. I'd love more faders tho....
