Favela of My Dismay
How common is this in Canada and Europe? It seems like everyday some whack job is offing his wife and kids over too much stress in his life. I've heard half a dozen cases of this in the past month alone. It's no longer the spooks and spics that kids need to worry about, but their own parents. You didn't hear about this shite 5-10 yrs ago and when you did it was on rare occasion. Of course the media quaffs this stuff up and puts it on a platter where it's starting to become self-perpetuating. The stigmatization that this deed once carried has been desensitized to where it is quickly replacing sole suicide as the "final act" of choice. Be a man and off yourself ala Jon Nodtveidt!

i could recall maybe a couple of cases

if people worked less this wouldn't happen so often, work is boring and stressful

If people would learn to better manage their money I think we'd see less of this. These murder-suicide cases seem, at least in the US, to be over lost jobs or massive financial debt (or both). When you're not tens of thousands of dollars in debt and / or you have decent savings, the loss of a job doesn't have to be catastrophic.

Of course there are always other factors involved, but these show up quite frequently.

Well RiA, you didn't ask about Japan but let me tell you, it seemed to happen all the time over there. Not so much fathers killing family members but kids killing parents or mothers killing kids. Even in my little town there was a woman that drowned her two kids. I was surprised at how little it was spoken of.

Japan has one of the highest suciide rates among industrialised countries so... not suprising.

worked less? huh?

Less focus on earning the big money to have piles of status symbols to live in, surround the home with and fill the home with. AKA: Enough money for the bills, regular outings for beer/food/concerts, with enough left over to save up for trips.

the loss of a job is very desirable

you don't have to work and you still get money
