Famous duos

Yep, been back for two weeks now.

Ah....good of you to drop in then. I thought you must have got lost on the Isle of Wight on a trip with Opeth.

How was your trip?

Who's P-Stan?

I did the European Encounter tour with Contiki. I went to various countries, photos of which can be found if you click on the link in my sig titled "My holiday snaps" and go into the Contiki folder. :)

Went to the following countries:

Day 1 - England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands. Spent night in Amsterdam. The red light district was very impressive.

Day 2 - spent day in Amsterdam.

Day 3 - went to St Goar, Germany. Saw a sign on the highway pointing to Dortmund.

Day 4 - went to Lucerne, Switzerland. Stayed on top of Mt Pilatus.

Day 5 - spent day in Lucerne. My favourite town ever.

Day 6 - went to Innsbruck, Austria. Stopped in Vaduz, Liechtenstein on the way.

Day 7 - went to Venice, Italy. Overrated. Might be more of a chick thing, especially the gondola ride. Nowt special. Lots of black guys selling dodgy designer handbags.

Day 8 - went to Rome, Italy. Awesome. Went out that night, looked at the Colloseum and the Trevi Fountain and the like. Had dinner at a real live Italian restaurant.

Day 9 - spent day in Rome. Went to Vatican City. Bought a Vatican City fridge magnet AND Pope Benedict XVI keychain. St Peter's Basilica is the greatest thing I will ever see. Sistine Chapel is... meh.

Day 10 - went to Florence, Italy. Bought a leather jacket. Went to a Tuscan dinner thing which ruled, then to a disco which promised Karaoke but it wasn't on when I got there, so I had to stand around because I hate dancing, and then had to go on the dance floor so that I wouldn't be mistaken for one of the creepy Italian guys who were planning on making moves on our women.

Day 11 - went to Nice, France. Awesome. Went to Wayne's Bar, which had a great covers band playing. Best night of the tour for me. Had a Long Island Ice Tea which did nothing for me.

Day 12 - spent the day in Nice, France. Great city. Bought a pair of sunglasses, also spoke French to a real French person for the first time. Went into the shop, asked if she spoke English, and she said yes. I of course assumed she meant that she was perfectly fluent in the language and proceeded to explain what was wrong with my sunnies and why I needed a new pair. She looked at me blankly until I said, "Ray Ban?" and she replied, "Ray Ban!" and took me to the Ray Ban section, where she got me to try on various pairs. I didn't like many of them, but the last one looked OK and she said, "Oui" which sounded like a ringing endorsement for me, so I bought them. Went to Monaco that night for dinner, ate rabbit which was awful, and went to the Sun Casino, which is marginally better than your local RSL. Wasted 40 Euros on the pokies.

Day 13 - went to Lyon, France. Stopped in Avignon on the way. Ordered McDonald's in French, but it took me a while to get the courage. Lucky for me I had seen a sign for a pub called "La Chien Galant" which reminded me that you put the noun before the adjective, so I knew to ask for "Un frites grande" rather than "un grande frites" when ordering fries. For all I know, though, I may have been wrong, but it worked like a charm. Went on to Lyon, didn't see much though. Went out for dinner. Had my first ever pint of Guinness. It is now my alcoholic beverage of choice. Loved it.

Day 14 - went to Paris, France. Went up the Eiffel Tower, then did the illuminations tour of all the lights and stuff.

Day 15 - spent the day in Paris, France. Great city. Went to St Chapelle, then to Notre Dame Cathedral, which was magnificent. Mass was just starting (it was a Sunday) and the choir started and... boy, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. If my heart wasn't made of stone I might have wept. Went to the Louvre, which was interesting, and recognised two works of art - the Mona Lisa and the Intravenus de Milo. Went to the Rodin Museum which ruled, then to Musee D'Orsay which was OK, then to the Musee D'Armee which was good, then walked up the Champs-Elysees but didn't make it to the Arc de Triumph because my feet were too sore, so I hopped on the Metro and went back to my hotel. Almost everyone else went to the Moulin Rouge that night but it didn't really interest me. If I want to see naked Australian chicks, I can just go to the Valley.

Day 16 - went to London, England. Nothing much to report on this day. Last day of tour.

That sounds friggin' sweet. Where in gay Paris did you stay? It's an awesome city. I'm hoping to make an appearance there at the year's end.

What was it like travelling in winter? Which places would you like to return to?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, Kem! :)

Wasn't even a quarter of a day, Blitzy - probably about an hour or two at most.

Winnie: stayed at Hotel Ibis in the north west of the city. Very nice. I want to go back to Switzerland definitely, and Rome and Paris. Especially Rome.

Did the short days bother you? Where'd you get to in the UK?

Where's your cruise taking you, Southy?
