You know, the old long days in summer, short days in winter thing.

Nah, didn't really bother me. A bit strange being on the bus at 8 and it still being dark, but apart from that it was cool. Definitely took a bit of getting used to the first week I was there, in London, but I was cool with it.

Ah that's cool. Yeah you do get used to it after a bit. I hope you liked the cold!

That cruise sounds fucking great, Southy.

Yeah I have heard that too that it is quite a dirty dingy city, but it has heaps of cool historical stuff...you walk around a corner and there's something that's been there for 2000 years.

Rocking up there on a Sunday morning was probably enough to leave a lasting negative first impression. I was walking in a park near our hostel on the first day and came across faeces just on the footpath, both of the dog and human variety. It was also common to notice piss stains against walls and in corners, and flowing away from the walls down the sidewalks.

My theory is, if they stop charging people to use public toilets, people will stop pissing and shitting in the streets, and the city won't stink.

Paris didn't stink at all when I was there one April. Probably depends where you go....

I've heard Athens is a bit like Rome was described....great historical stuff, but dirty modern parts.

People don't generally shit in the streets in Sydney though, although if you catch the wrong wave from Bondi you can end up swimming with it.

Nah, that's not swimming...it's just going through the motions.

I have only ever heard about the French soiling their own streets, I have a friend who lived there for 2 years, she said you never get used to the filfthy ways of the Parisians

Honestly, I had no problem with Rome or Paris. Rome was beautiful. Sure, it's not the most pristine city in the world, but it is a couple of thousand years old. Was neat and tidy when I was there. And Paris was gorgeous. Streets were clean, people were friendly (in fact, all but two of the French people I dealt with were friendly), etc etc.

But as I said, it may be a seasonal thing. This was in winter when crowds were down, so it may have been tidier because of that.

I even had a Parisian cop with a gay Parisian cop hat give me directions in English, which was very nice of him. :headbang:
