what was his name again ?
he was in this band and could do really fast blast beats and hit his snair with both sides of his drumstick.

im looking for his video, it was in this recording room he recording a song.

I believe it's called the 'one hand roll'. Fastest guys I've seen doing it are; Martin(Kataklysm's Serenity In Fire- drummer) / Max Duhamel / John Longstreth / Darren smokes too! And even though there's none on 'Annihilation of the wicked' George Kollias FLYS' with his 'one handed rolls'. If you like a steady dose of this kind of blast--- get Kataklysms' -Serenity In Fire- and Origins' -Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas-

It's really not that difficult doing. It's just hard doing it for a long period of time and in time!!!! I can do it either hand.... hehehehehe... but that's it! No kicks or anything else........ I'm a geetar playa:kickass: G.K. showed me his technique and I've watched a cool video about it.

I've heard most commonly referred to as the "gravity" blast.

Not technically a "buzz" roll either, just really, really quick single strokes, using the rim of the drum as a fulcrum. Sounds very cool and very quick when used correctly.

I love John Longstreth, and he smokes at these. Origin had another drummer named James King that was sweet too. Mangini is a hoss and can do anyything he wants, that guy is incredible. Fast guy i've ever seen live would be Kolias with Nile a couple months back when they came through KS with Hypocrisy and Decapitated. Great, great show.

and now, i'm rambling. :kickass: :Puke:

one hand roll/gravity blast... its almost like a SPASM technique. it's scary to watch.

i have so much respect and awe for drummers of the dm/bm genre who can not only play that quickly and in time, but have the STAMINA.

If I do retarded ass double bass with my feet trying to "air kick" along to something, my shins lock up and go numb after about 3 minutes.

Gene Hoglan is a P I M P.

I'm no drummer, but isn't the correct technique the key to infinite (well, infinite enough :D) stamina in double kicks. The fast guys play with just their foot tips, twisting on the ankle and moving nothing else, the knees stay nearly motionless. You also sit very high, so that your legs don't need to be held "in air" by your leg muscles - that will tire anyone within 5 minutes.

Is the free hand techqnique easy for a drummer?

For an inexperienced drummer, I'm gonna say "NO". I've been playing for almost only 3 years now and have come to the conclusion that the only thing easy about drums are basic slow & medium paced beats such as
AC/DC type stuff.

I don't get alot of practice in but everytime I do, I notice a significant improvement. More so then I ever remember with guitar. So far I can only do medium fast paced double bass for a few minutes and snare blasts for about 15 or 20 hits...proficiently.

Being right handed, my left arm is much weaker than my right so either my whole arm or my wrist are almost always sore. My legs often are sore also and can even feel it in my side abs at times. All these muscles have to get built up over time for you to be able to have that stamina. Not to mention the blisters and blood blisters which will break, bleed and peel to develop calluses.
It sure is a hell of a work out.
I'm hoping a year from now I'll be able to do wicked fast double bass and blasts for at least a few minutes but god knows!

Kev, I know programming drums is kind of a pain. If you want to play drums then get a set and as they say, "practice, practice, practice". Just be warned that it's gonna take time so don't quit the programming just yet!

"the only thing easy about drums are basic slow & medium paced beats"

that's funny, my drummer told me that when recording their last album, the slowest song gave him the most trouble :D :D :D

I'd say that slower parts (especially very slow) reveal all the timing problems your drummer has, which are otherwise clouded by sheer speed...

Phil Rudd of ACDC is one hell of a drummer and he's not at all easy drummer to play. Sure, it's all one kick one snare midtempo thing, but he does it so convincingly and his timing is rock solid! You can play the same hits (hell, even I can and I don't play drums), but the chances are you won't be so powerful and energized. And he's just one example...
Simpler doesn't always mean easier IMO.
