Is the free hand techqnique easy for a drummer?
For an inexperienced drummer, I'm gonna say "NO". I've been playing for almost only 3 years now and have come to the conclusion that the only thing easy about drums are basic slow & medium paced beats such as
AC/DC type stuff.
I don't get alot of practice in but everytime I do, I notice a significant improvement. More so then I ever remember with guitar. So far I can only do medium fast paced double bass for a few minutes and snare blasts for about 15 or 20 hits...proficiently.
Being right handed, my left arm is much weaker than my right so either my whole arm or my wrist are almost always sore. My legs often are sore also and can even feel it in my side abs at times. All these muscles have to get built up over time for you to be able to have that stamina. Not to mention the blisters and blood blisters which will break, bleed and peel to develop calluses.
It sure is a hell of a work out.
I'm hoping a year from now I'll be able to do wicked fast double bass and blasts for at least a few minutes but god knows!
Kev, I know programming drums is kind of a pain. If you want to play drums then get a set and as they say, "practice, practice, practice". Just be warned that it's gonna take time so don't quit the programming just yet!
