FearFactory Obsolete\Digimortal sound

Well-anybody knows-how to get it?
I have a pod xt,and-as i know-Dino Cazares uses pod 2 pro for his tone-thru mesa poweramp and mesa cab.
I think-he uses pectifier emulation,which called-in new pod xt-as a "treadplate dual"
I try many times-but-absolutely nothing comparable.
Maybe-he uses some specifics like eq or tubescreamer or anything else?

Do you have a Mesa poweramp and cab?

I -may be wrong-, but -I seriously doubt- that he used the -POD rig- in the studio.

If you -really want- his tone, you're -gonna have to- grow a big fat -Mexican hand- with a lot of -power behind it- to get -that sound-. -Even though- the -rigs changed- through the years, -his tone- did not.

Obsolete was a modded JCM 800 and mesa cab with V30's. Then his JCM got stolen on tour.

Digimortal was recorded with a POD Pro rackmount (sounds nothing like PODxt), mesa 2:90 poweramp and Mesa 2x12 V30 cab.

I didn't know his beloved Marshall got stolen! That really sucks.

Where did you guys hear that Digimortal was recorded with the POD rig? I still don't believe it.

His Marshall got stolen on the Obsolete tour. I believe they were in Canada at the time, in or near Toronto. Apparently their entire stage setup and all their gear was lifted. Their truck was stolen, looted, and found some distance away with only a few cymbals left.

I think I remember reading an interview with Dino after Digimortal came out where he talked about his new rig and using it on the album.

There is a Making of Digimortal documentary on the Linchpin EP (UK version only, I believe though). There they talk extensively about recording etc.

Hmm, perhaps I could upload it to the ftp..

Edit:
Uploading the two recording parts now, should be up in about 50 minutes.

Dino started using 7 strings around that period too, so that's gonna be the #1 factor in his tone. It's not impossible to play these riffs on a six string tuned to B. But, the songs that drop to A require a 7, or playing an inverted A on a 6. After the Marshall got snagged, he began using the Flextone II head, I believe. Last I saw, Dino was using the Ibanez "Thermion" head.

Awesome, man. I'd love to see that. I'm an old school FF fan (At Death's Door), but I really, really love the production on Digimortal. I have the cd, but have never put it in the DVD drive - is there studio footage on there as well?

Part 1 features a little bit more instruments etc.

Not all versions of Linchpin EP have them. In fact, I believe only the first UK pressing had them. But it looks like the Australian version had them too.

There's also two more videos on the CD. They talk about the band in general and their history. They're really just some small inserts, none of the videos are more than 7,5 minutes long.

Here's his POD rig on guitargeek. HERE

Plus, I had an old guitar mag that had an extensive interview about the POD pro and how they recorded it. They initially tried with 4x12s and it didn't work. They experimented with other cabs and that's how they came up with the 2x12 for recording purposes. I can't remember if they talked about mics, but they also talked about how they recorded the bass and drums too.

Its definitely a POD pro on the record.

Those Fear Factory videos were on Roadrunner's website when Digimortal first came out. I remember seeing them way back then.

I used the following and got extremely close sound.

Line 6 Pod Pro
Mesa Coliseum 300 (200 watt per channel tube power amp)
Bellari 562 Sonic Exciter (Like a BBE 482 with a 12ax7 Tube)
Marshall 1960A and B 4x12 cabs replaced with Vintage 30's
Schecter A7 Elite with EMG 707's.

I basically used the Line 6 POD Pro on Insane Mode, no cab emulation, Distortion boost activated, Presence boost off. No effects.

Mesa Coliseum 300 with Deep and Modern Mode Activated, Presense up high.

Bellari Bottom set to about 2 o'clock, Bright Set to 4 o'clock.

Pretty much the sickest tone I ever owned.

Sold the Mesa Amp in fear of having to retube it. It had like 12 6L6 tubes, 6 Rectifier tubes, and I think a few 12ax7's. Basically 2 Triple Rectifier Heads in 1 4 space Rack.

Sold it and got a QSC RMX850.

The QSC was just as loud if not louder but I had to activate the Presense on the POD Pro after selling the Mesa.

It was a loss but close enough to the same tone.

I definately recommend the Bellari 562 Sonic Exciter to anyone looking for a Fear Factory tone.

I always demonstrated to my friends that playing without the Bellari sounded like Machine Head, Activating the Bellari sounded like Fear Factory.

Pod Pro Settings:
Set Amp Model to Line 6 Insane
Drive About 2-3 o'clock (Hold Tempo Button and turn Distortion on)
Bass 3 o'clock
Middle 10 o'clock
Treble 3-4 o'clock (Hold Tempo Button and turn Presense on unless Poweramp has Presense)
Channel Volume all the way up
Reverb Level Off
Output 10-12 o'clock (Poweramp volume all the way up)
Effects set to Bypass and Hold Tempo Button and turn Effects to Bypass for No Cab Emulation.

1/4 Left and Right Outputs to Bellari 562 Sonic Exciter (Effects loop works too) then to Poweramp Inputs.

Also works great when slaving a Tube Head in the Return Jack.

Poweramp to 4ohm Marshall 4x12.

Dino's JCM800 Probably didn't sound like the album on its own.

It probably sounds that way after it has been mic'd and EQ'd Compressed and blended with Christians bass and Raymonds Kicks.

But the Bellari Sonic Exciter gives it that sound on its own.

And it is different from the BBE's in that it has a tube and sounds like a tube amp.

Perfect Compliment for Line 6 users to gain tube warmth.

I also used the Bellari on my 5150 before I sold it due to lack of volume capabilities before turning to mud. It was also a sick sound.

What is great about the Mesa Coliseum 300 and 2:90 is that they have the Deep and Modern modes which adds alot of weight to the sound. Combined with the Presense knob the poweramp is pretty sick. The Marshall 9200 and VHT 2150 are also both sick poweramps.

I think I was one of the only owners of the Coliseum 300 I had seen until finally Pat Obrien from Cannibal Corpse got one. Mesa Discontinued them.

I dont think they make Bellari Sonic Exciter anymore, but if you can find one on Ebay snag it.

They were about $360 new and I bought my second Bellari used as a backup for $150.

There is also a Bellari Compressor that comes with the Sonic Exciter in a 2 space rack unit.

I would get that if I couldn't find the 562 on its own.

Good Luck.

I was basically using the same setup and sounded dead on except my amp was the more powerfull Mesa Coliseum 300.

I thought the Digimortal sound had too much chorus or something on his main guitar tone.

I thought mine was actually closer to his JCM800 sound on Obsolete and thought overall that Line 6 was a good choice for him to go to for recreating his previous sound.
