finally some new work from me - epic etc

only an early mix at the moment, still experimenting with reamps.

guitars were an ibanez rg with stock pickups and to cut a long story short these DI's have driven me mad. resonant frequencies between 2-3khz and fizz from around 3k upwards. plugging the PRS into the same chain yesterday proved it - instantly sounded better.

lesson learnt.

anyway - guitars atm are just 2 tracks of 6505 through mesa cab (ill reamp the other 2 when im settled on the tone). bass is a fender jazz through podfarm.

what do you think? unfortunately the guitars will always be inherently fizzy due to the pickups/guitar, so its really about how much i can tame it.

Empires

what do you guys think?

I think you're definitely in the right direction, but man... those last two chords in the main progression have some MAJOR tuning issues. It's seriously conflicting with the synths Did they write it like that or is it the guitarist hitting things sharp? I hear it in the prechorus bit where the vocals get doubled up, too - I realise you've already tracked a bunch of these guitars, might be seriously worth it to re-track with your PRS to get tone + tuning issues sorted?

i know what you mean with the last 2 chords - the band like to play these odd chords - the bass notes kind of emphasize it but thats how they wanted it....

seriously tempted to retrack. im actually playing with podfarm right now and funnily enough its sounding ok which gives me a bit of hope.

Machinated it sounds great. It's wide but translates well into mono - and with the sense of depth I'm struggling with in my mixes. I'd be great if you could elaborate a bit on how you achieved the depth and what you used on your master fader.

Cheers,

Sounds really nice.

Strings sound a bit middy/boxy I think. (Guitars were boxy in the last mix but they seem alright now - just around 2:30 there's something bugging me. Sounds like overEQ or something?
Kick sounds effing awesome altho a TOUCH too clicky? Mostly but I'd back off the highs a bit, its thump is killer tho - what did you use? I'm not diggin the snare, I'm not sure why though. Sounds like the one off the latest Devildriver. Did you use Slate?

The vocals have too much distortion on them imo. I can't hear it on what im listening to before but on in-ears before some of that room sound was creeping in that happens when you compress/distort too hard on vocals that weren't tracked in a completely dead room. Can't hear it anymore tho, but am on different system.

@Akarawd: nothing fancy going on with the wideness or depth, when im mixing I just have a URS CSP on the 2 buss (dont always use one) which is basically taking no more than 2dB off at most. "mastering" im using ADClip for loudness, pretty nice.

@ Morgoe: I agree with the boxiness, and im sure its coming from the strings now.

Yeah, the kick may be a bit clicky, im thinking about maybe having a kind of roomier kick underneath to fill out the sound more, and I'll try backing off the top end. Snare is a few slate samples mixed together.

With the vocals I had a bit of trouble getting them to sit in, so the distortion helped with that, ill try backing off the distortion a little and use more compression so it cleans it up a bit.

Cheers guys, really good feedback!
