Anyone ever use a Firepod(or similar) and a laptop in a live setting for all of thier sound needs? For example, triggering your kick and snare, and using vst effects patches instead the effects built into a mixer?

The reason I ask is because I was wondering if it can be done. I can get tracks to be effected as far as recording, but I can't figure out how to "monitor" that effect taking place...therefore, not being able to use it live.

never tried it, but guessing this:

bassdrum example:
microphone in bassdrum, xlr to input 1 of the firepod. set the gain, click the monitor knob in let's say cubase on the bassdrum channel, mix it (use inserts effect patches etc) and select as output FIREPOD OUTPUT 1, then send that into a DI and to the PA.

should work, right?

Same with Guitar/revalver/software modeler; guitar -> firepod, effects on the channel, click monitoring icon and send to a DI->Mixer via the output on the back of the Firepod

let me know if this works? very interested in this!

I think you'll get seriously noticeable latency between the kick hit and the triggered sound coming out of the PA too... When I was tracking my drummer in December and we had Drumagog on the track and enabled the monitoring just out of curiousity the triggered sound sounded like it was flamming with the actual kick...

If you can get your interface latency low enough there is a live function within drumagog that I believe nulls the plugin latency at a higher cost to cpu.

I could do it. My laptop sucks by comparison to what is out now.

Depends on the plugs though.

Exactly. Some plugins introduce their own latency to the equation.

I think running sound this way is feasible but risky. I personally would not run the firepod outs directly to the power amp. If I was going to attempt something like this I would run the channel outs into line ins on a mixer in case something happened. I believe the presonus firepod can run standalone which would allow you to take over with the mixer and other outboard gear if available, in the event of a computer failure.

You would have to be quick to rip out the firewire cable but yes it could work (in case of a failure). :headbang:

hehe, yeah; I ofcourse meant the specific channel output for that channel (kick or guitar or whatever) on the firepod (not the main or line output)!
