First band ive mixed using two 7 Strings.

New Rough Mix i started. Any suggestions before is start making changes?
The bass is meant to be huge on this one. And i know ive still gotta side chain it to the kick still. I've just approached this mix way different to how i normally do. So feedback would be awesome.

Guitars a too fizzy for my taste and the bass and guitars don't really gel. I'd personally add abit more high end to the bass.

And also the gang chants are very distant and uninterpretable. You've gone to all the trouble of recording them, layering them up etc... Make then massive and audible!

Other than that, I really like the mix. Vocals are spot on, especially the cleans. The clean part is b-e-a-utiful haha.

Guitars definitely have some high-end that can be cut out. They're also lacking in mids, like BtB said, they don't blend with the bass very well. I agree with the crowd chants too. The drums are good, but the snare sounds really robotic and is a little distracting to my ears.

Thats debatable. Not all snares have to sound like a wet fish hitting a bucket!
Whole purpose of this is to not sound anything like the overdone Sturgis copycats on here. I dont normally mix this way and im hoping to be stepping in the right direction (my own direction) with this mix.

Thx Cory, i know the snare can sound like that at times, its because its fundamental frequency is most of its sound. Its all different velocities and done on a multi sample instrument with a round robin. Its just a strong low end frequency being tamed with dynamic controlling plugins.

So heres a revised mix. Hi passed the guitars at 5K and made em 2db louder.
Split the bass and added a dirt track to make it work better with the guitars.
Dropped vocals by 2 db. Side chained the bass to the kick (2db GR)
And gang vocals are more up front and but a little softer (about 2db)

Any thoughts?

Whats that kick dude? and also, whats your bass chain looking like? I can get a nice bass tone but i cant get the low end to be wide and warm like that, yours is sick.

Let's just say my bass chain is way more complex than my guitar chain ;p everything I did on this song I've never done before including the 2 buss. Approached em all individually and differently. But once I got this song waxed to where there are no more obvious errors ill share all the info and stuff I tried on this. I just want a little more feedback. Got my friend working on the new Bury Tomorrow checking it out for me too.

Ah, understandable that you want more feedback. I'm hardly the worlds most qualified person to give feedback but from what i can hear heres what i would do personally:

Snare - pretty sharp and boxy, faster attack on the comp and maybe a transient designer to add some sustain, possibly add some room if you've got a nice IR. small cut at 200hz with a hi shelf.

vocals - bring them down a smidgen, the guitar tone is real nice and i feel as though the vocals are slightly too loud and are taking the focus away from that 7 string goodness :)

thats all i can pick out on my little av40's :p

I didn't tell u to copy and mix snare like Joey. It's good when doing things in own ways. but IT JUST DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT to me. I feel the snare sound like when you knock the door or cutting the wood.

Thx man, yeah i agree with the vox being slightly loud, i did bring em down, but maybe a another db wont hurt. Snare is prominently 200 hz anyway so pulling that out will destroy the whole point of the snare. I think thick boxy snares work well with 7 strings IMO

All good man ;) but the snare stays, It works for me and the client. It that snare with 7 strings is probably the only time i would use a snare like this. I hate making bands sound the same, every band i record sounds way different, i mix different every time to keep it unique to a band and not make bands unique to my studio rather.
