Fistula – For a Better Tomorrow
CorleyMusic – 2006
By Adam McAuley
This is an album that could be potentially good, but is brought down by a couple of facets, a really short running length, the fact that they’re wallowing in the mire of a sub-genre that’s been done far better by other bands and a sort of repetitiveness that starts to wear thin after a long while.
One can hear them definitely playing underneath a template laid down by bands like Iron Monkey and Soilent Green and while there are certainly similarities, those two bands bring much more compelling and punishing sounds to the forefront than these guys do and thus they sort of get lost in a mire of trying to do something similar to a superior established sound. And thus, while the album is relatively exciting, it drowns in a mire of drudgery and doesn’t really have the incredible production values to make it seem more pristine than it is either. It has a sort of gargled sound to it and fades from your listening attention because of the rather sub-par production and the mediocre playing on the part of the band.
However, it isn’t all bad as there is a catchiness and slight vehemence to the proceedings. A downtrodden approach is also very evident throughout and is only increased by the muddy production again and while they serve up a decent offering for the style, there isn’t anything noteworthy enough to make Fistula anything special. Perhaps fans of the style will get something out of this release, but for everyone else your time is better served elsewhere. A decent album overall, but Fistula fail to make an impact.
