I've said it before and I'll say it again, Chris Pennie (Dillinger Escape Plan) is my fave metal drummer. His technique is flawless, his technicality is insane, and he's creative as fuck.

blasting is not one of his strong points, though. anybody who's heard Calculating Infinity can attest to this.

If you're talking grind drummers, Scott Lewis is/was better.

Yeah, their first album. I saw them live on that tour and I've never seen a more intense display of grind/blastbeat drumming.

Depends on the band. I could play in Agalloch, Drudkh, Mastodon etc because they don't use the blasts that much. I couldn't play in Dimmu, anything Hellhammer is in, etc.

Sean Reinert is much better than Gene Hoglan.

Reinert is superb, intense and blistering on human, sporadic yet fitting on focus.
But you wouldn't listen to human, then compare it to gene on symbolic and say "yeah hes not really as good" they both kick some major ass, i hate seeing gene wasting away in SYL.

mastodon's drumming seems like it is infinitely more complex and demanding than a band like dimmu borgir (although I'm no expert)

I like Flo, but there are many drummers that are better in my opinion. Derek Roddy, Brann Dailor, various drummers that Nile has had, various Vader drummers, etc.

Drummers like that make me wonder why people think Flo is so special.

I dont think there is someone better than him, his times and rythms are amazing and impossible to even think about playing them.
Death > every band and Richard Christy > Every drummer.
