No Care Ever
i guess it was eventually inevitable that this would happen. It's a mix i'm fairly satisfied with. There are things i want to change, but absolutely nothing on the list the band sent me is one of those things...
Listen to this mix, and then read these overall changes the band wants...
i'm especially pissed about the bass and vocal stuff...the drum stuff is whatever

---------------
Overall
All songs need more low end
Songs need more dynamics (too heavily compressed)
Guitars are gated too heavily
Vocals need to be louder (except harmonies)
Toms need less reverb; too much room ring
Snare needs less reverb; needs to crack a little more (acrylic Pork Pie)

Guitar and Bass Overall
Bass is non existent and has no low end
Guitars need to be ‘chunkier’, fuller
Too compressed? There’s no dynamic difference between heavy hits and softer strums
Cody’s tone ideas:
5150 or 6505 Head
V30 Cab

how do dynamics?¯\(°_o)/¯

and is bass really non existent?
i could see that if maybe...you were listening on laptop speakers

call me stubborn...

brian. the mix sounds great.

eff what they say.

I would say that if they think mixing paramore with screamohorriblecore was a good idea... i wouldn't even begin to care what they thought about the recording quality

I will go against the grain and say that your mix is good but their requests are legitimate.
You have to deal with the idea that not everybody like the same sound.
Don't take it as a personal offense but as a challenge.
Try to keep an open mind and you're gold.
Having the band asking for more dynamics is great. You can bash the band as much as you want. It's fun. But in the end, this is their music, not yours.

Maybe they want something more like this:

Goddamn I love this song, and the sound is great too :Saint:

It is their music, but it's also his mix. If the band gets what they want yet the mix sounds like shit, Brian might lose potential clients.

That said, you could probably follow some of their suggestions while still having a good sounding mix. Do they have a particular reference cd they want their mix to sound like? Maybe you can reason with them that the vocals on your mix matches the reference cd and so on. If their reference cd uses a POD, you could maybe convince them that a 5150 + cab isn't necessary.

As for dynamics, you could raise the threshold a few db here and there. Do they have a specific rms they're shooting for? If they want the cd to be super loud and still want dynamics, tell them they can't have both.

As for your mix, I think it sounds great.

I don't know if you took the time to acctualy read their remarks, i don't think they will make the mix sound like shit, just different.

Oh, and about the cancerbats tone, they added some cool dynamics to the song having the vers doubletracked and the chorus quadtracked

Yes, that's what I meant. If he can fill a part of band's requests and still manage to make it sound good, not only he won't loose clients but he will broaden his customer base.

wtf? I hear plenty of bass!! And you got a good tone going on there!! I also love the guitars. Also about the dynamic drums, since you're using slate samples it won't be hard for you to pull that off. But about the "bass is non existant" ... lol

+1.

and although your mix sound good, I actually agree with their request for more dynamics, louder vocals and raising the bass guitar a bit (although it's definitely not non-existant). Extremely crappy music btw, I'm glad I don't have to spend hours listening to this

Hey Brian, maybe you could play it next to your reference for the band and show them why you disagree with them. It's worked for me in the past when I thought the band was wrong about their mix input. Also, you might want to tell the band that if they're listening on a stereo or in there car that they should put the eq flat before they try to make mixing decisions as well. I remember I had one bassist who kept asking for his bass to be louder and he just couldn't hear it because he had cut all the way on his cars eq.

Also, I know you just started recently but all your mixes are pretty great, maybe you should think about telling bands from now on that you "produce" everything that comes out of your studio. It might be able to save you from situations like this.

to be honest, MOST of their revisions are legitimate. I CAN however, hear the bass perfectly fine, but the overall mix is lacking a little low end and punch so I'd say, rectify that and see how it goes.

and the tone, eh, yeah, im getting really, really tired of all these podxt sounds, but i understand that it's all you have in your current situation and you make do very well.

i think the vocals are perfect though... i'd be scared to turn them up any more. lol

man this really annoys me, people just assume, you(or however) only use pod cause you cant afford some tube amps....am i the only one that likes these sounds? i love joeys productions for example and brians, and wouldnt want the guitars to sound different

you never hear people say oh yeh im bored of the 5150 sound do ya?

please dont take this the wrong way, it isnt just aimed at you

Yeah you do.

I say it all the time, and I OWN one.

I like a lil variety every now and again.

As for the mix, I think it sounds good. If you turn those vocals up any more they will be WAY too strident to listen to. It's borderline too much for me now.
I don't get how distorted guits can be too compressed? That's what it's supposed to sound like.

I was disagreeing to the notion that "in the end it's the band's music". In my response, "the band" was meant to be any hypothetical band, not just the one Brian is mixing. Perhaps I should have been clearer.

I did agree that some of their complaints could be addressed without compromising the mix too much. Some things like raising the vocals seems like a bad idea and I think you can convince them of it. At least these guys aren't screaming at you about sample replacement or playing to a click .

as an owner of a 5150 AND a podxt, i must say i'm honestly kind of bored of both, haha. i love both when they are in the proper context, but i still get bored of it.
