FMR makes a compressor called the RNC (really nice compressor, no joke lol), and it's like a 1/3u sized unit, much like the PreSonus stuff. Supposedly the compressor is really.....REALLY good, but I wanted to know if any of you guys knew about it. I want an extremely cheap (price, not quality) compressor for vocals, acoustic guitars, and bowed classical instruments (e.g. violin, cello, etc.) I will be using high end condensor mics on them (Neumann Solution D, TLM103, Blue Baby Bottle and Dragonfly, etc.) Somebody recommended the Behringer 2-channel "tube" compressor, and said that although the name says Behringer, it's actually a good unit. Trying to go for cheap gear, amazing results kind of thing. Latah.

An FMR or a Behringer? Just to be clear, hehe. The price and the reviews of the FMR are really great, but the Behringer is around the same range so...Latah.

Get the RNC it's SWEEEEETTT!!! Not trying to sound to much like a Behringer hater. But the only thing I have by them is the Power Play headphone unit. It CRANKS!!!!!

check out this cool rack-mount from Funk Logic for use with FMR's RNC and RNP: Click Here

Sweet, that was one thing that actually made me turn my nose up just a tad was that they were "desktop units", I prefer things like mic pre's and outboard comps to be rackmounted...unless it's a monitor controller, then it doesn't belong on the desk!!! Hehe. I love the Haunted by the way, One Kill Wonder = best album ever. Although the self-titled and Made Me Do It were killer as well. Just got rEVOLVEr, really getting into it. Blah, anyway, thanks for the tips guys. Latah.

I was hoping to use it on vocals and acoustic guitars. For acoustics because my band's stuff does a lot of switching from strumming to arpeggiating with a pick to fingerpicking, so I need the compressor to do well for all of them (bring up the fingerpicking and arpeggiating to strum levels). Or should I just get a limiter for the strumming and set the gain on the mics to pick up the fingerpicking and stuff really loud? Either way is fine I suppose, I just want it to make the quiet guitar parts as loud as the loudest strumming. And quiet vocals to be as loud as yelling vocals....which is what a compressor is for, right? :p. Latah.

I found the FunkLogic website and they actually make two things that I am looking at getting. One is the desktop oak rack thing, it holds those 1/3u rack things, vertically, in a small oak box, looks very nice. Or I could get the rack thing they make that holds two RNC compressors, since I won't need the FMR mic pre. Although I wish they made the Chevy version still of the rack unit, it looks a lot nicer than the all black. Anyway, thanks for showing FL to me Mr. Murphy. Latah.

Personally I'd record them seperatly with the preamp gain set at different levels. Then use a comp in moderation to level out the fingerpicking rather than make it louder so that it all sounds even. Then edit it togther with liberal use of the gain to make it all the same level.

So explain more. I think I know what you are saying, so I'll explain back to you, lol. You tell me if it's not what you mean...You mean I shouldn't use the comp to make the fingerpicking sound even with the strumming, as far as the same level goes, because fingerpicking isn't as loud as strumming, so making it JUST as loud won't sound as good as using a comp just a tad to bring up the fingerpicking to a level that is *perceived* as the same loudness? Lol. If that makes sense (my explanation back to you), hehe. Latah.

I've been thinking about picking up an RNC for about a year now, but still haven't gotten around to it. I recently got a Distressor though, and the first day I used it I knew I'd never be able to track vocals without it again. I cannot express how much I love it... :kickass:

However, I still don't have a good 2-bus compressor, plugin or hardware (can't even attempt to afford 2 Distressors, the one scraped me dry for a while), so Andy's comment about being able to smack a mix with the RNC got me curious.

Would you say that the RNC is a possible alternative for us mortals who can't afford an Alan Smart C2? Obviously a sub-$200 box isn't going to be an SSL, or even close. But anything that can give me a little more of that elusive, godly drum punch will be a very welcome addition to my collection.

In my opinion, you can't compare a RNC to the SSL / Smart. It's a different thing.
If you already have a Distressor, save your money for another channel.

I own a Distressor and an RNC and prefer the Distressor for almost everything!

Is that a fair comparison? I mean, doesn't the distressor cost much more than the RNC?????

Yeah, but I can get two RNCs, in a FunkLogic NCC-1701 (rackmount for two RNCs) for $390. I've pretty much decided on that deal from Atlas Pro Audio. Andy, would you say the RNCs do vocals and acoustic guitars well? Latah.

Hey andy, just got a Distressor myself... what other kind of setting do you like it with on vox? How about the Nuke and perhaps Britishmod settings?
