Ulver released a completely acoustic folk album that might be more what you're looking for. It's called Kveldssanger.

I never understood the finntroll hate, I think their music is really catchy and fun.

I like Moonsorrow more than Finntroll; but they have two very different sounds and approaches.

Finntroll is more like a fun, rockin' drinking band. Moonsorrow requires more patience and attention.

Try solo works from Vintersorg or Otyg, his folk band. Primordial is also a good band, with clean vocals.

Also you can try Ensiferum, Wintersun, KromleK but i think these bands are more viking metal than folk metal. Still good
